Klempau: History and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Klempau
Settlement history, cycling connections, and local features such as the white stork pair give Klempau a distinct character.
The History of Klempau Siedlung
Klempau Siedlung developed from the former Klempau Hof estate, which was first a ducal domain and later owned by the district. In 1938, the domain was divided into ten settler plots along Sarauer Straße and Tannenweg. This development—from the historic estate to the creation of the settler plots—is a central part of local history.
Cycling Routes and Circular Trails
Cycling routes connect Klempau with the neighboring municipalities of Krummesse and Berkenthin. The municipality also has paths for shorter or longer circular walks and bike rides. When planning, you can choose between a loop within the municipality and a tour connecting Klempau with a neighboring village.
One suggested cycling loop runs from Klempau to Krummesse and back via Tannenweg, Kählstorfer Weg, or Taterweg. These three return routes offer specific alternatives for the loop. Another named route is the Lindenbusch cycling tour. It follows Sarauer Straße, passes through Kreisforst Farchau, Groß Disnack, and Kählstorf.
One suggested path connects the village with Klempau Siedlung via the former school path and Tannenweg. This route is unsuitable for bicycles and strollers. Bear this in mind when choosing between this connection and the cycling loops described above.
Storks, a Garden, and Local Points of Interest
A pair of white storks regularly breeds successfully in Klempau. The white stork is also depicted in the municipal coat of arms. There, it expresses the aim of preserving the species and represents the coexistence of agriculture and nature. Wildlife and agriculture are therefore both part of what characterizes Klempau.
The Am Teich village restaurant attracts many visitors from the surrounding area. Another local point of interest is the garden at Dorfstraße 16, which is open to interested visitors on Friday afternoons from April to September. Check the opening hours and access arrangements before visiting so you can take the seasonal schedule into account when planning.
The riding club is based at Klosterhof Klempau. The site has an outdoor arena, a seasonal grass jumping arena, and an indoor riding arena. Facilities and access arrangements may change, so check the latest information before planning a visit. The seasonal jumping arena differs from the two other facilities mentioned.
Hiking in the Wider Herzogtum Lauenburg Destination
For broader hiking plans, the wider destination of Herzogtum Lauenburg offers its own regional setting: the E1, E6, and E9 long-distance trails run from north to south via Ratzeburg, Mölln, and Lauenburg. The region also has more than 20 shorter hiking routes, ranging from 4 to 27 kilometers. These regional trails complement the circular routes described in Klempau with further options in Herzogtum Lauenburg; they are a separate level of trip planning.
