Discover Roseburg: Music, Half-Timbered Architecture and Local History
Accommodation in Roseburg
Roseburg can be explored through its cultural sites, local history and walking routes. Wotersen Estate hosts music events as part of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival; the Half-Timbered Hall House in Wotersen offers a glimpse into the village’s architectural history. Other highlights include the House of Silence, a Buddhist meditation centre, and a regular walking group that sets off from the millpond. This gives visitors interested in culture, history or walking several specific themes to explore during their stay. If your stay is tied to a particular date, it is worth checking the latest event and programme details.
Music and castle history in Wotersen
Concerts as part of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival take place in the riding hall at Wotersen Estate, within the municipality of Roseburg. The building dates from the 19th century. The estate park is also open to visitors during the festival’s rural music events. Access to the park is tied to these events, so check the current festival dates in advance. Wotersen Castle is a Baroque manor house surrounded by parkland. Wotersen is also known as a filming location for the television series “Das Erbe der Guldenburgs”.
The Half-Timbered Hall House: a building dating from 1787
The Half-Timbered Hall House at Wotersener Weg 1 is a listed monument. The building dates from 1787 and is a two-post timber-framed structure with a gabled roof and half-hipped gable ends. Oak framing and “Wilder Mann” motifs define the courtyard-facing façade. The Half-Timbered Hall House has a natural-stone base; its side walls have been partly rebuilt in brick. It preserves a legible historic pattern of use and is particularly significant for the history of Roseburg in the 18th century and for the regional history of Lauenburg. This single building offers a chance to observe both its construction and the site’s historic use.
Local history and walking routes
Historically, Roseburg was a small, elongated settlement beside the waters of Gethsbek and the millpond. In the past, Roseburg was important to Wotersen Estate because of its watermill. The millpond is also the starting point for a regular walking group that explores routes in the village and its surroundings. No registration is required. Check the group’s schedule before your visit.
A circular cycling route also leads towards Roseburg: on the Schloss-Wotersen circular cycling route, the trail runs near Siebeneichen towards Roseburg and onward to Wotersen. If you plan to take this route, check the route details again before setting off.
House of Silence
The House of Silence is a Buddhist meditation centre in Roseburg and is considered one of Germany’s oldest Buddhist meditation centres. The centre is open to all Buddhist schools. Its grounds include a main building, a guesthouse, a meditation hall and parkland. Seminars are held there almost all year round. As dates and availability may vary, check the programme in advance. You do not need to identify with Buddhist ideas or principles to attend seminars.
