Wohltorf at Tonteich

Sachsenwaldbad Tonteich is a natural bathing facility in the Sachsenwald where you can swim outdoors. Tonteich was formed in the former clay pit of the Friedrichsruher Tonwerke. The site is also associated with protected surroundings in the Sachsenwald and sightings of dragonflies and tufted ducks. This brings swimming, wildlife watching and the history of the former clay pit together in one place.

Plan your visit and journey

You can also use the snack bar at Tonteich without paying the bathing admission fee, provided you inform the staff at the entrance. The availability of food and drink may change seasonally; bathing operations may also be subject to seasonal changes. Check the latest information on both before your visit.

Take the S7 suburban train to Wohltorf station; from there, it is about a ten-minute walk to the bathing area. You can also reach the facility by bicycle or car. The ten-minute estimate refers to the walk from the station, not the entire train journey. Check the connection before setting off, as transport details may change.

A broader look at the Duchy of Lauenburg

The Duchy of Lauenburg offers a wider setting of forests and lakes: 26 percent of the Duchy of Lauenburg district is forest, and the district has 48 lakes. The Sachsenwald, Schleswig-Holstein’s largest contiguous forest, is located in the district. The Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park is also situated in the heart of the duchy.

In the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park, you can hike, cycle, canoe and swim in forest lakes. Four signposted cycling routes add to the options; the nature park also has hiking trails, observation towers, nature trails and rest areas. Guided excursions with experts focus on the district’s wildlife, plant life and cultural history. Check the relevant program for a specific date.

For longer journeys, the European long-distance hiking trails E1, E6 and E9 run from north to south through the Duchy of Lauenburg via Ratzeburg, Mölln and Lauenburg. The Old Salt Route long-distance cycle path runs from Lauenburg to Lübeck along the Elbe-Lübeck Canal through the duchy. This makes it possible to distinguish between regional routes by mode of travel: long-distance hiking trails and a cycling route along the canal. Another cycling option is the approximately 40-kilometre Lakes Cycle Tour, a circular route through the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park that starts in Ratzeburg.

Museums also offer further topics to explore in the Duchy of Lauenburg. The District Museum of the Duchy of Lauenburg in Ratzeburg displays exhibits on the history of the Dukes of Lauenburg and the inner German border. In Lauenburg/Elbe, the interactive, three-storey exhibition “Human-Model-Machine” at the Elbe Shipping Museum explores shipping. Visitors can get hands-on with models and interactive stations.
