When planning a stay in Bad Elster, walks and travel arrangements are two practical starting points. A loop around the Luisenteich can be assessed by its length, elevation gain and surface; parks and mineral springs add to the local walking options. The broader Vogtland travel destination offers further cultural, landscape and culinary topics for a wider regional perspective.

Walks in Bad Elster

The 3.2-kilometre loop starts at the car park, goes around the Luisenteich and returns to the starting point. It includes 10 metres of ascent and descent each; the surface is asphalt or fine gravel. Check local conditions before setting out.

Bad Elster also offers walks in the spa gardens, Paul-Schindel-Park and the rose garden. Mineral springs such as the Marienquelle and Moritzquelle are also local walking destinations. The loop offers a set route option; parks and springs provide further destinations for walks.

Plan your journey

Bad Elster is served by the Elstertalbahn/Vogtlandbahn; bus route V-9 from Plauen also operates. Booking in advance is recommended, especially for the bus. Check the travel information before your journey, and include a booking in your plans if you intend to use the bus.

Culture and landscape in the Vogtland

The broader Vogtland travel destination offers further cultural and landscape topics. The Sparkasse Vogtland Arena Klingenthal is one of Europe’s most modern large ski jumps. An adventure railway takes visitors to the 32-metre-high take-off tower, from where there is a spectacular view over Klingenthal. The Göltzschtal Bridge is one of the two largest brick bridges in the world.

The Vogtland also includes the Royal Gardens of Bad Elster, which combine extensive historic parks with spa architecture of significant cultural and historical importance. The Musical Instrument Museum in Markneukirchen displays the world’s largest playable violin. Musical instruments have been made in the Upper Vogtland for more than 350 years. The Vogtland Panorama Trail is 225 kilometres long, making it a very different distance from the 3.2-kilometre loop around the Luisenteich. Bad Elster also has ten mineral healing springs and natural moor.

Regional cuisine and cycling

Green dumplings are a Vogtland speciality made from raw, grated potatoes. At GĂĽndels Kulturstall in Reichenbach, you can regularly take part in potato tastings; a potato market is held there in autumn. Check the current dates before visiting.

Most cycle routes in the Vogtland are close to bus or train stops. Bicycles can be carried free of charge, subject to vehicle capacity. When planning a cycling trip using public transport, the route’s proximity to stops and the available capacity for carrying bicycles are two separate points to check.
