Steinberg: Hiking and Culture in the Erzgebirge/Vogtland Nature Park
Accommodation in Steinberg
When planning a trip to Steinberg, hiking and nature take centre stage. The local trails differ in their access points, woodland coverage and winter use; there is also the 659-metre-high Steinberg with its tower and destinations showcasing traditional crafts. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether your trip will focus mainly on a particular type of trail, a winter outing or cultural interests.
Plan Hiking Trails by Profile
The Herb Educational Trail connects Schönheide, Stützengrün and Rothenkirchen; you can join it at any point along the route. This gives you flexibility when planning where to start. The Mausberg Hike offers a different experience: around half of the route runs through woodland, and one section passes along the edge of Rothenkirchen. The two trails can therefore be distinguished by specific features: flexible access points on the Herb Educational Trail and roughly half the route through woodland on the Mausberg Hike.
Steinberg is located in the Erzgebirge/Vogtland Nature Park. The park offers routes on three quality-certified long-distance hiking trails, including the Vogtland Panorama Trail® and the Erzgebirge/Vogtland Ridge Trail. The Vogtland Panorama Trail is 225 kilometres long. This length makes it a large-scale hiking option; in contrast, features such as access points and woodland coverage can help you choose among the local trails.
Winter Use and Trail Character
When there is enough snow, the Herb Educational Trail can also be used for winter hiking and cross-country skiing, but it is not groomed. Since snow conditions and grooming can vary, check conditions before setting out on a winter tour. The Kuhberg cross-country ski trail is well signposted and has gentle to moderate ascents and descents. The winter-planning information differs: for the Herb Educational Trail, snow conditions and the lack of grooming are important; for the Kuhberg cross-country ski trail, signage and terrain profile matter.
Steinberg and Crafts
Steinberg is 659 metres high and is considered a popular destination for excursions and hiking. The Steinberg Tower is associated with the mountain; a circular trail on Steinberg includes the tower. This makes the tower a clearly identified point of interest to include in your hiking plans. Wood art is another cultural theme: Erzgebirg. Holzkunst Kuhnert in Rothenkirchen is part of the tourist attractions in Steinberg. The Steinberg–Wildenau–Steinberg circular trail also includes the Holzdrechslerei demonstration workshop. If you are planning a visit to the wood art or the workshop, check in advance what visiting options are currently available.
In the Wider Vogtland Destination
The wider Vogtland destination offers additional, distinct themes. Musical instruments have been made in the Upper Vogtland for more than 350 years; the Markneukirchen Musical Instrument Museum displays the world’s largest playable violin. This long musical tradition complements the nature and hiking themes with a distinct cultural focus.
The Sparkasse Vogtland Arena Klingenthal is also a regional excursion destination and one of Europe’s most modern large ski jumps. An adventure railway takes visitors to the 32-metre-high take-off tower. In Bad Elster, the Royal Gardens combine extensive historic parkland with spa architecture of cultural and historical significance. Bad Elster also has ten mineral springs and natural peat; the Göltzsch Viaduct is one of the two largest brick bridges in the world.
