Rothenburg/O.L. offers various ways to explore the town’s history and landscape: historic buildings, museums, Rothenburg Castle Park and paths along the Neisse. A beaver nature trail and an aeronautical engineering museum also provide their own thematic highlights. When planning your stay, you can decide whether you are particularly interested in architectural history, nature or technology.

Castle Park, River and Beaver Nature Trail

Rothenburg Castle Park is one of the largest landscape parks of the 19th century in the Upper Lusatia–Lower Silesia region. Eight of the eleven oak species that once grew there have survived. Rhododendrons, hydrangeas, magnolias and tulip trees add to the tree collection. The park therefore offers a distinct botanical focus alongside the town’s historical attractions.

Beyond Rothenburg, you can walk through meadows to the Neisse. The river runs alongside the town for almost 20 kilometres. The beaver nature trail offers another way to explore the river landscape: this nearly five-kilometre circular route uses information boards to introduce visitors to the lives of beavers, their spread and potential conflicts with human needs. The trail was established after beavers that had disappeared from the river floodplains settled there again. The difference is clear when planning your visit: the nature trail is a themed circular route, while the Neisse also provides a point of reference for walks through the meadows.

Museums and Architectural History

The Rothenburg Town Museum is housed in one of the town’s oldest buildings and combines a local history museum with the town library. Temporary exhibitions explore topics including Rothenburg’s historic trades, the park and the castle. The Wilhelmshof Farm Museum offers a different focus: set on a three-sided farmstead, it provides insights into rural life and work from the 18th to the 20th century. Exhibits include a hay wagon, a tractor, a ridging plough, a poppy seed mill and a historic farmhouse kitchen. Check the farm museum’s current opening hours before visiting.

The buildings also reveal different periods of construction. The Protestant Church was rebuilt after the town fire of 1798 and consecrated in 1805; its tower was built later, between 1838 and 1840. The Town Hall on the market square was built around 1800 and received a Neoclassical extension after 1850. The tank memorial commemorates the capture of Rothenburg by Soviet and Polish armies in April 1945. Together, these sites span the town’s history from the early 19th century to a specific event of the Second World War.

Aviation and Cycling Route

The Rothenburg Aeronautical Engineering Museum combines a collection with a special visitor experience: 20 aircraft from the second half of the 20th century are on display outdoors. Visitors can also sit in a MiG-21 and have their photo taken in the aircraft. This provides a distinct focus on aviation technology alongside local history and landscape.

For a cycling trip, you can follow the Oder–Neisse Cycle Route south from Rothenburg to Görlitz along the Neisse. The beaver nature trail and the cycle route offer different points of reference: a circular route with information about wildlife and a southbound route to a named destination.
