Leutersdorf combines local history and architecture with hiking and cycling. Two specific routes cater to different travel interests: a 12.8-kilometre cycling route and an easy 3.42-kilometre circular walk. There is also the town’s textile history and Wacheberg as a topographical landmark. If you are looking for a hotel in Leutersdorf, you can plan your stay around whether culture, cycling or a short hike is your priority.

Local History and Architecture

The Church of the Assumption of Mary was consecrated on 5 October 1862, after two years of construction. Leutersdorf Castle was built in 1828/1829 under Pastor Noack. These dates place the two buildings in context: construction of the castle took place just over three decades before the church was consecrated.

The Lautexerinnerungen Museum documents the history of the local textile industry. Textile traditions are therefore a distinct historical focus alongside architecture. Together with the trails, they offer a choice of different themes for planning your trip, rather than a focus on a single attraction.

Cycling Route and Circular Walk

The Half-Timbered Houses Cycling Route is 12.8 kilometres long and runs from Hainewalde via Spitzkunnersdorf and Leutersdorf to Eibau. Along the way, it passes the Lautexerinnerungen Museum, traditional half-timbered houses and the historically significant former Niederkretscham inn. Since 2024, it has been part of the Saxon Central Uplands Route. It thus connects several places through the themes of textile history and half-timbered architecture.

The Karasek Circular Trail is an easy 3.42-kilometre walk. Information boards recall historical sites associated with the route’s history; the starting point is at Karasekschenke Neuwalde in Leutersdorf. From Zittau, take bus line 30 to the Waldschlösschen stop to reach the Karasek Circular Trail. Check the timetable before travelling. By comparison, the circular trail is much shorter and rated easy, while the cycling route connects several places. The Upper Lusatian Mountain Trail also passes through Folge.

Landscape and Setting

At 452 metres, Wacheberg is Leutersdorf’s highest point and offers views into the distance in good weather. These views depend on the weather; if they are part of your travel plans, you can take the weather conditions on the day of your visit into account. The elevation and weather-dependent views add a specific landscape element to your trip planning, alongside the cultural and historical themes and the routes described above.

In the wider destination of Görlitz

In the wider destination of Görlitz, the Schönhof adds a Renaissance example to the town’s architectural history: after a town fire, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style from 1526 onwards. The Schönhof is the main building of the Silesian Museum in Görlitz and is one of the oldest Renaissance buildings north of the Alps. Also in Görlitz, a live feeding takes place in the live-animal area of the Senckenberg Museum of Natural History at 4 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month; admission is included in the museum ticket. Check the current calendar before your visit.
