Planning a trip to Oderwitz can start with its mill trails: they link several mills and offer two signposted circular routes of different lengths. There are also regional trails, Spitzberg with its viewpoint and climbing area, and leisure and cultural activities. These themes can help you plan your stay and find a hotel in Oderwitz.

Mills and Circular Trails

Oderwitz is home to three well-preserved post mills and the still-operating Berthold Mill, a former watermill that now runs on electricity. The Berndt Mill is the oldest of the post mills; it was built at its current location in 1787. It provides a specific historical point of reference among the town’s mill-related attractions.

Two signposted mill trails lead to different mills: the 4-kilometre route links the Berndt Mill and the BirkmĂĽhle. The 5-kilometre circular trail passes the NeumannmĂĽhle and continues to the Berthold Mill. The 4-kilometre route is the shorter of the two individual options; they can be combined into a single 8.7-kilometre route. Visits to the mills are possible by prior arrangement.

Regional Trails and Spitzberg

Beyond the individual mill trails, Oderwitz is part of the 112-kilometre Oberlausitz Half-Timbered House Road circular route. The town can also be explored via the Oberlausitz Mountain Trail and the Oberlausitz Zittau–Bayreuth Cycle Route. These route names offer another framework for planning: the Half-Timbered House Road is a circular route, while the Mountain Trail and Cycle Route are two other named trails.

The 510-metre-high Spitzberg offers panoramic views across Upper Lusatia and Bohemia from its viewing rock. The same rock is also a recognised climbing area. The viewpoint and climbing area offer different reasons to include Spitzberg in your travel plans.

Leisure Activities for Different Interests

The summer toboggan run can be used in both summer and winter. At Oderwitz public baths, there are separate areas for swimmers and non-swimmers. Facilities also include a slide, a three-metre diving tower and a one-metre diving board. The heights make the difference between the tower and the board clear.

The Erfinderkiste experimental and learning workshop offers more than 300 m² of play space. Children explore the world there by seeing, hearing and touching, and learn about the laws of nature through play. Other activities include children’s birthday parties and group afternoons. If you are planning a celebration or group afternoon, check the current availability of your preferred activity in advance.

The Oderwitz Weather Cabinet introduces visitors to weather observation and forecasting through weather talks. Its focus therefore differs from that of the trails and leisure facilities: the emphasis is on observing and understanding the weather.

Baking and Model Technology

At the Otto demonstration bakery, baking is presented in an original wood-fired oven at Feinbäckerei Otto’s half-timbered house in Oderwitz. Baking itself is the main attraction here. Oderwitz also has a digitally controlled model railway that is 45 metres long and includes a garden railway. It adds a model-technology theme to the mills, trails and other leisure activities.
