Mittelherwigsdorf lies in the valley of the Rietschebach, also known as the Ritzebach, and the Mandau. At 7.5 kilometres long, it is a horseshoe-shaped Waldhufendorf (a linear forest-clearing village). These features provide a concrete framework when choosing your destination: the settlement pattern, architectural heritage and routes shape the character of the municipality. As you plan your stay, you can consider whether local history, cycling and hiking routes, or views across the landscape are most important to you.

Village Character and Upper Lusatian Half-Timbered Houses

The municipality has preserved a representative range of Upper Lusatian half-timbered house types dating from the 17th to the 19th century. The Upper Lusatian Half-Timbered House Route forms part of the German Half-Timbered House Route. Each district also has a circular trail that lets you explore that district along the Upper Lusatian Half-Timbered House Route. This combines views of local house types with a way to get your bearings among the different districts. The historic Kretschamgut in the centre dates from 1686 and adds a single, precisely dated building to this picture.

History and Local Traditions

Mittelherwigsdorf was first mentioned in a document in 1312. It is considered one of the oldest settlements in southern Lusatia. Its history also encompasses former livelihoods and the development of farmsteads: linen weaving was historically the main source of income for local smallholders. Numerous farmsteads rebuilt around 1860 to 1870 shape the edges of the valley. In Radgendorf, half-timbered houses associated with the homes of 19th-century weavers have been preserved. Those interested in local history will encounter both architectural traces from several centuries and a former local livelihood tradition.

Cycling Routes, Hiking Trails and Views

The Rübezahl Cycle Route and the Half-Timbered House Route pass through Mittelherwigsdorf. The two local cycling routes connect with the Oder–Neisse Cycle Route and the Spree Cycle Route. Check the availability and signage of the routes locally. Mittelherwigsdorf is one of the ten member municipalities of Zittau Mountains Nature Park. The Zittau Mountains and their foothills have more than 700 kilometres of hiking trails; this figure refers to the region, not just the municipality. The barefoot trail includes two crossings of the Mandau. Water levels and seasonal conditions can affect these crossings and are therefore relevant when planning. Viewpoints in the municipality offer views of the Jizera Mountains, Ještěd, the Zittau Mountains and the Upper Lusatian Highlands. Alongside exploring the village character and architectural history, routes and landscape views therefore offer different ways to enjoy your stay.
