Hainewalde: Castle, Valley and Ecclesiastical Heritage
Accommodation in Hainewalde
Baroque architecture, ecclesiastical heritage and landscapes along the Mandau, Roschertal and Breiteberg lend Hainewalde a variety of character. A local circular walk links several historic sites. For planning your day, it is useful to know the approximate duration of the walk and the different visiting conditions for the castle park and the castle’s interior.
Castle History and Ecclesiastical Heritage
The New Castle of Hainewalde is a Baroque ensemble built between 1749 and 1755 on the hillside above the Mandau. Five terraces lead from the valley up to the main building. The sequence of terraces makes the stepped elevation a defining feature of the complex: here, the castle and its grounds can be viewed together.
The Kanitz-Kyawsche crypt stands beside the church in Hainewalde. The Baroque structure dates from 1715 and is part of the town’s ecclesiastical heritage ensemble. The crypt is older than the castle; together, the two buildings offer examples of Baroque architecture from different periods in Hainewalde.
Roschertal, Breiteberg and Circular Walk
The Roschertal is a wooded stretch of the Mandau valley, just under a kilometre long, between Hainewalde and Mittelherwigsdorf. It is a gorge valley with wooded slopes 50 to 60 metres high. The length and the slope height describe different aspects: one indicates the extent of the stretch, the other its sides.
Breiteberg is Hainewalde’s local mountain and lies 510 metres above sea level. It takes about 30 minutes to reach from the town; the Breitebergbaude is located at the summit. While the Roschertal is characterised as a wooded valley, Breiteberg draws attention to elevation and its summit. The inn’s opening hours may vary; check them before your visit.
A local circular walk of about 45 minutes links the Old and New Castles, the “Blue Ribbon” on the Mandau, Hainewalde Church and the Kanitz-Kyawsche family crypt. The duration provides a guide for planning your day, while the stops bring together connections to the castles, river and church in one circuit. Cycling downstream in the direction of the Roschertal is also possible. For an outing, you can therefore choose between a circular route of a set duration and a bike ride following the river. As trail conditions can change locally, check them before setting out.
Visiting Information and Herb Garden
The castle park is generally accessible free of charge year-round. The castle’s interior, by contrast, can only be visited during scheduled tours and events; it is not open to the public every day. If you are planning to visit the interior, check the current dates and access arrangements in advance.
The Hainewalde herb garden is next to the parish grounds. It features a bridge and a willow house, as well as around 60 labelled medicinal plants. An information book about medicinal plants complements the labels and gives the garden a distinctive focus alongside the town’s architecture and historic sites. As maintenance and access may change, check the current access conditions before your visit.
