At Muldestausee, water activities meet hiking and cycling routes, nature watching and traces of lignite mining. These different themes give you a practical starting point for planning your trip.

Water Activities and Routes

Muldestausee covers an area of 6.3 km². Sailing regattas and dragon boat, canoe and rowing competitions take place on the lake. Fishing, sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, rowing, canoeing and dragon boating are all possible on Muldestausee and Lake Gröbern. This means a range of ways to enjoy the water alongside the competitive events.

Numerous cycling and hiking routes run around Muldestausee. The Kohle-Dampf-Licht cycle route can be combined with the Elbe Cycle Route, the EuroVelo 1 route, the Berlin–Leipzig cycle route and the Mulde Valley Cycle Route to create a longer loop. The network of routes complements the water activities with excursions by bike and on foot. If you want to plan your trip around a particular way of getting active, you can choose between water activities, cycling and hiking.

Discover Nature and Experience the Landscape

On the north shore of Muldestausee, HAUS AM SEE presents a permanent exhibition featuring more than 80 specimens of native animals. It also provides information about the reservoir area's former open-cast mining history; supplementary programs may vary. Wildlife and the development of the landscape are presented side by side, offering two different perspectives on the destination.

The Mulde floodplain upstream of Muldestausee includes floodplain forest, meadows, wooded areas, flood channels and oxbow lakes. At the reservoir's inlet, Mulde Bridge near Pouch offers a view of the river delta that formed behind the inlet structure. Here, the landscape can be seen both in its floodplain features and in the shape of the river delta.

A hike from the inlet of Muldestausee follows the upper slope of the Mulde Valley and offers wide views across the Mulde floodplain and the former Goitzsche mining area. In winter, waterbirds from northern regions gather in the ice-free area where the river flows in. These include goosanders, common goldeneyes and tufted ducks. The route and the winter bird migration offer different highlights: the former is described for its expansive landscape views, while the latter is a chance to observe waterbirds.

Muldestausee lies on the edge of DĂĽbener Heide Nature Park. A valuable biotope provides a habitat for rare and endangered animal species. Together with the Mulde floodplain and the wintering birds, this makes nature a theme that encompasses both landscape features and wildlife.

Mining History and Views

Muldestausee was created in the 1970s, after the Mulde was diverted and the former Muldenstein lignite open-cast mine was flooded. Its waterside landscape is therefore closely linked to the transformation of a former mining area. You can also encounter mining history in the exhibition at HAUS AM SEE and in the wide views across the former Goitzsche mining area.

The Red Tower in Pouch was built in the 13th century and is 30 meters tall. More than 105 steps lead to its viewing platform. From the top, the view extends across Goitzsche Landscape Park, Pouch, Muldestausee and DĂĽbener Heide. The tower adds a historic structure and expansive views to the lake's more recent landscape history.

Food and Drink

The Schachtbaude “Pannenkoek” is located above Muldestausee on the KOHLE | DAMPF | LICHT cycle route. Its offerings include pancakes, poffertjes and regional meat products made in-house. The selection of food may vary.

Gröberner Seekate offers fresh and smoked fish specialties, homemade game sausage, fresh eggs, selected wines and products from Dübener Heide. The availability of these products may also change. If dining options are important to your trip planning, check the current selection in advance.
