Zerbst/Anhalt: Cultural History and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Zerbst/Anhalt
Zerbst/Anhalt combines local history with regional cycling themes. To plan your stay, you can first decide whether you are mainly interested in historic sites, Catherine II or cycling. The sights and routes each provide a specific framework for these interests.
Cultural History and Catherine II
The Zerbst/Anhalt Town Museum is located in a former Franciscan monastery. Ornamental details in the refectory and chapter house evoke the monastery’s history. The exhibition on local history explores connections with the Reformation and education. A prison cell with historic inscriptions from the 17th century also recalls the town’s university history.
The “Catherine II” collection is a branch of the museum and is dedicated to the life and work of Catherine the Great. The “Catherine the Great” tourist route offers another perspective: its ten courtly stops explore the life of the princess, her family and the history of Zerbst. The collection and route thus offer different ways to discover Catherine II and her connection to the town.
Churches and their architectural history are also among the defining themes. St. Nicolai stands by the market square as the ruins of what was once Anhalt’s largest hall church. Despite war damage, St. Bartholomäi remains an Evangelical parish church. Inside are gravestones belonging to princely families, frescoes and a panel painting by Lucas Cranach the Younger depicting Christ’s baptism in the Jordan. The two churches therefore represent different historical states: the ruins of St. Nicolai and St. Bartholomäi, which is still used as a parish church.
On regular opening days, access to the castle is subject to a special arrangement: visits are possible only as part of guided tours or accompanied walks. Check the current visiting arrangements in advance. The museum offers tours of its permanent and temporary exhibitions, as well as talks on historical topics. Check the current program for tours and talks.
Gardens, Town Walls and Cycling Routes
The castle garden covers 153,900 square meters and includes a castle pond. If you would like to explore the town’s history on foot, you can walk along the approximately four-kilometer-long medieval town wall. The walk along the wall offers another perspective on Zerbst’s history and complements the themes explored by the churches and museum.
For cycling, look beyond the town: the Zerbst region between the Elbe and the Fläming offers around 40 kilometers of cycle routes through river meadows, fields, meadows and forests. The Fläming Cycle Route connects the EuroVelo Route R1 near Bad Belzig with the Elbe Cycle Route at Walternienburg or Dessau-Roßlau. Near Garitz, it branches off via Walternienburg towards Zerbst. This information describes both the region’s cycling landscape and a specific route connection. Check current trail conditions before setting off.
There is an e-bike charging station with two sockets on Schlossfreiheit in Zerbst/Anhalt. It is near Zerbst Castle, the castle garden, St. Bartholomäi and the town center. Bike racks and the “Catherine II” collection are opposite the charging station. As infrastructure and access may change, it is advisable to check the details before setting off.
Plan Your Travel Dates and Stay
Seasonal activities may also factor into your plans: asparagus is grown on the sandy soils in the Vorfläming region and near the Elbe, and is associated with visits to Zerbst/Anhalt. Availability depends on the season.
If tours, talks, a visit to the castle or a cycling route are part of your plans, take into account the visiting arrangements and trail conditions, which should be checked in advance.
