For a trip to Nomborn, two hiking routes offer concrete guidance: the circular trail at Bornkasten is about two kilometers long; the dog-friendly Eisenbachtal loop covers 9 km and takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. There is also the Wällertour, a cycling route and a local history closely connected to basalt and wells. This lets you plan your time based on route length and personal interests.

Hiking Between Eisenbach and Bornkasten

The premium Wällertour Eisenbachtal hiking route passes through Nomborn. It follows idyllic meadow valleys, is accompanied by three streams and leads through varied mixed forests. Along the Eisenbach, the meadows and the stream’s meandering course shape the trail. A small loop incorporates Bornkasten, the local hill of Nomborn, into the route. The trail is mostly on lightly surfaced paths.

A detour at Bornkasten passes a geological outcrop with fan-shaped basalt columns. From there, views stretch across the Eisenbach Valley, the Gelbach Valley and the Montabaur Basin. The Bornkasten circular trail is about two kilometers long and leads to and around the basalt summit. Information boards cover basalt, flora and fauna, as well as Celtic ancestors. Some paths on the detour may be uneven, and trail conditions may also change seasonally.

Another specific option is the dog-friendly Eisenbachtal loop. It starts and ends at the Studentenmühle parking lot, is 9 km long and takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. The route uses natural paths as well as mostly surfaced paths with little asphalt. The stated duration helps with day planning; check the route and current conditions before setting out.

Cyclists can also include Nomborn in a longer ride: the southern Westerwald cycle route passes through the village and runs from Vallendar to Limburg an der Lahn. Check the current route and signage before riding.

Basalt Landscape and Nature at Bornkasten

Bornkasten is part of Nassau Nature Park and was named GeoTop of the Year in the Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus National Geopark in 2023. The disused quarry reveals the region’s geological history. Its spoil heaps provide habitat for rare plants and animals. The hill thus offers insights into basalt as well as views over surrounding settlements and the valleys and basins mentioned above.

Wells, the Bakehouse and Local History

Basalt quarrying at Bornkasten began around 1922 or 1923 and ended around 1930. Much of the stone extracted was made into paving stones. The boards along the circular trail complement this industrial history with topics relating to nature and earlier settlement.

Five new wells are part of Nomborn’s well heritage. They include the Kiliansbrunnen, built in 1989 for the village’s 700th anniversary. The restored Lambach pump runs exclusively on water power, without electricity, and supplies four of the five wells. Its operating status may change; if interested, check in advance.

In the village center stands a half-timbered bakehouse with a functioning wood-fired oven, where bread is baked regularly. Public baking may depend on the season or on events. If you hope to see it, ask in advance about possible dates.

Getting There and Practical Planning

Nomborn is in the southern Westerwald recreational region. The A3 is relevant for road travel; Montabaur and Limburg are ICE stations. Nomborn can be reached from Montabaur ICE station by bus route 450. Timetables and route information may change, so check them before your trip.

Hiking, cycling and local history offer different ways to spend your stay. The Bornkasten trail length and the stated duration of the Eisenbachtal loop give you two concrete points of reference for planning. For the Wällertour and the cycling route, it is also worth checking the current route and signage before setting out.
