Discover Molsberg: Castle History and Park
Accommodation in Molsberg
The history of Molsberg Castle stretches from a castle built before 1116 to a later Baroque palace. The castle chapel and park have their own stories to tell; seasonal access and the different routes are also relevant when planning your visit.
From Castle to Baroque Palace
The Lords of Molsberg built the castle before 1116. It was part of a chain of castles intended to protect the trade route between Frankfurt and Cologne. In 1760, the castle was demolished to make way for a Baroque palace commissioned by Johann Philipp von Walderdorff. Molsberg Castle has stood on a basalt rock since 1766. It is located on the present-day B8, the historic trade route between Frankfurt and Cologne.
The palace was never completed and consists of a single rectangular wing. Thus, two distinct construction phases are central to its history: the earlier castle and the later Baroque building. The castle rooms and chapel are housed under one roof.
Castle Chapel and Garden Pavilion
The elaborate furnishings of the castle chapel were designed by Johannes Seiz. Michael Eytel created the stucco work on the ceiling and in the altar niche. Restoration of the chapel was completed in 2007 after six years. A model of the former castle can also be viewed in the palace; confirm access locally before your trip.
The restored garden pavilion serves as an exhibition space for contemporary art. The program includes two exhibitions a year. Check current access and exhibition dates before visiting. This makes it possible to distinguish the castle complex’s architectural history from the changing art exhibitions in the pavilion.
Castle Garden and Countryside
In 1785, a garden with 258 plum trees and twelve pyramid-shaped trees was laid out at Molsberg Castle. The estate also includes centuries-old trees and views across the surrounding hilly landscape. Two trees in the castle park were named German Champion Trees in 2011. The historical details about the garden and the trees’ award provide different points of reference in time for the park.
Parts of the castle park are open to visitors from Easter through the end of October. As access is seasonal, check the information before your visit. This allows you to plan for the park during the stated opening period rather than assuming it is open year-round.
Hiking and Cycling
The Westerwaldschleife trail passes Molsberg Castle. An easy 13-kilometer hike begins and ends in Steinefrenz. It leads through hilly fields and meadows, with Molsberg Castle among the route’s sights. Unlike the cycling tour, this hike has a specified start and end point.
Events and Seasonal Visits
The traditional Whitsun fair in Molsberg includes an open-air church service in the castle courtyard. Details may change from year to year, so check the current dates if you would like to plan your visit around it. Together with the exhibitions in the garden pavilion, the events calendar offers another possible reason to plan a visit. Here, too, checking the specific dates helps you take seasonal activities and park access into account separately.
