Girod: Clay Landscape and Mill History
Accommodation in Girod
Girod combines a distinctive clay landscape with traces of mill and architectural history. The municipality provides a concrete starting point for planning your trip: you can first explore local clay mining, follow the traces along the Eisenbach, or take a closer look at the historic religious buildings in Girod and Kleinholbach.
Clay Mining and Landscape in Girod
The clay deposits in Girod are mined in an ongoing, terraced open-pit operation. The Westerwald clay extracted here is also known locally as “white gold.” The clay deposits and terraced open-pit mine are therefore among the defining features of the Girod landscape. Those who choose the area for a trip will find a distinctive theme here, different from the historic buildings and mill history.
The name “white gold” gives clay mining a local designation, while the open-pit mine makes its present-day significance for the landscape visible. Together, these aspects offer insight into Girod’s connection with clay. The municipality can therefore be described in terms of more than just individual historic buildings: the extraction of Westerwald clay is also part of its distinctive character.
The Eisenbach, Mills and Architectural History
The Eisenbach flows through Girod and Kleinholbach and is also depicted in the local coat of arms. Five historically documented mills stood along the stream: SchultheiĂźenmĂĽhle, StruthmĂĽhle, DollmĂĽhle, MichelmĂĽhle and FreimĂĽhle. Some of the mills have been partially preserved. Their names preserve the history of milling along the stream; the surviving parts add visible architectural evidence to this record.
The religious buildings also provide a timeline for local history. St. James’s Church in Girod was rebuilt in 1786 on the site of an earlier chapel. In Kleinholbach, the present-day St. Peter and Paul Chapel was built in 1771. The two building histories are easy to distinguish: in Girod, a church was rebuilt on the site of an older chapel, while in Kleinholbach, the present-day chapel was built. Together, the stream, mills and religious buildings bring different facets of the municipality’s history into view.
More Themes in the Wider Westerwald Destination
The wider Westerwald destination offers further distinct themes. In Hachenburg, the Hachenburg Experience Brewery offers beer experience tours and brewing courses; individual dates can be arranged by phone. If you would like to include this activity, check current booking options directly with the brewery.
Stöffel Park in the Westerwald covers a former basalt quarry site of around 140 hectares and brings together industrial heritage, geological history and nature. Fossils are the focus at the TERTIÄRUM, including the famous “Stöffel mouse,” which documents around 25 million years of Earth’s history. These geological themes complement Girod’s clay landscape with a different perspective on the Westerwald’s geological history.
The Westerwald also offers a range of options for hikers. The WesterwaldSteig runs for 235 kilometres through the Westerwald and is divided into 16 stages. The Druidensteig runs for 94 kilometres over seven day stages through seven river valleys; there are more than 30 geo-information points along the route. The two long-distance hiking trails differ primarily in length, number of stages and the geo-information available along the Druidensteig. Check the current route plan before setting out.
Choose the Focus of Your Trip
A simple distinction can help with your hotel search: should your trip focus mainly on Girod’s clay mining, the Eisenbach and architectural history, or would you also like to include themes from the wider Westerwald destination? This question can help you decide how much you want to cover before comparing hotel offers. The Girod content provides the local focus; brewing courses, fossils and long-distance hiking trails are separate Westerwald themes.
