Oberhaid combines historical local connections with two routes that are easy to distinguish in scale. The RB8 is an approximately 10 km circular hiking route that starts in Oberhaid; the 48 km Kannenbäckerland Tour includes a stop at the Brunnenplatz in the village. If you are planning a stay, you can choose between a circular hiking route and a longer regional cycling tour. The names of historic mills also provide a tangible link to the past.

Court Seat and Mills in Oberhaid

From 1376 to 1560, Oberhaid was the seat of a special Haiderbach court. From 1450, the Lords of Isenburg held an estate in Oberhaid; this period overlapped with the time when the court was based there. An oil mill was built in 1700 and later became known as the Fuchsmühle. Together with the Mausmühle, the Fuchsmühle is one of the two old mills in Oberhaid’s municipal area.

RB8 and Kannenbäckerland Tour

The RB8 is a circular hiking route through the Kannenbäckerland. It starts in Oberhaid and is approximately 10 km long. The start and finish are on Hauptstraße in Oberhaid. The route follows the Kleiner Saynbach towards the Mausmühle and then continues to a wooded area. Check the current trail conditions before setting out. The Kannenbäckerland Tour is on a different scale: it is 48 km long and includes a stop at the Brunnenplatz in Oberhaid. This means a circular hiking route and a longer cycling tour with a named stop in the village are available side by side—a difference in activity and route length that can help you plan your stay.

Landscape of the Kannenbäckerland

Oberhaid is one of the municipalities in the Kannenbäckerland. The region is a relatively level plateau with gently rolling ridges and deeply incised valleys crossed by natural streams. Extensive woodland is concentrated on peaks, ridgelines and dry slopes. The Kannenbäckerland is one of the 17 historically significant cultural landscapes of statewide importance in Rhineland-Palatinate. Both the landscape and its cultural-historical classification are therefore part of Oberhaid’s regional context.

More Things to See in the Westerwald

The wider Westerwald destination offers other distinct nature and culture experiences. Stöffel Park is a former basalt quarry covering around 140 hectares, combining industrial heritage, geological history and nature. The park’s TERTIÄRUM displays fossils, including the famous “Stöffel mouse”; the fossils document around 25 million years of Earth’s history. The Holzbach Gorge in the Westerwald offers a different landscape: this breakthrough valley is about one kilometre long, with basalt walls up to 30 metres high. Compared with the RB8, the WesterwaldSteig is a much longer long-distance hiking trail: it covers 235 kilometres and has 16 stages. The trail is certified as a “Quality Trail Wanderbares Deutschland” and is one of the “Top Trails of Germany.” Check the current route plan and certification status before your tour.
