Luckenbach: Hiking, Mining and History
Accommodation in Luckenbach
Luckenbach lies in the valley of the Kleine Nister. If you’re looking for hotels in Luckenbach, you can plan your trip around the hiking and cycling trails, as well as local themes such as mining and history. The Wäller Tour Bachgeflüster offers particularly detailed information, combining route length and elevation profile with scenery, sights and practical visitor tips.
Hiking the Wäller Tour Bachgeflüster
Luckenbach has a municipal network of hiking and cycling trails that connects to the WesterwaldSteig. The Wäller Tour Bachgeflüster is a challenging 16.2-kilometre hike, with 350 metres of elevation gain and 350 metres of descent, and a stated duration of 4.6 hours. Check current trail conditions before setting off: unpaved sections may be slippery, steep, stony and uneven. Sturdy footwear is recommended.
The route passes through landscapes alongside streams, quiet stretches of woodland and elevated viewpoints around Atzelgift, Luckenbach, Limbach and Streithausen. Other landscape features include waterside rest areas and viewpoints with an alpine character. At 14 audio-guide stations, QR codes provide stories, historical background, and information about sights and regional features. The tour experience therefore includes listening and reading stops as well as the route itself.
The tour passes the Protestant Gustav Adolf Chapel in Luckenbach and then climbs steeply via the Himmelsleiter in Atzelgift. It also leads to Grube Edelstein and past the war memorial in Luckenbach. This makes it possible to plan the hike around several specific destinations and sections, rather than considering only the total distance.
Chapel and visitor mine
The Gustav Adolf Chapel between Atzelgift and Luckenbach adds a historical point of interest to the route: it was planned in the 1930s, construction began in 1947, and it was consecrated on 17 September 1950. The chapel is both a destination along the hike and a building with a clear history of its origins.
A guided tour of the Grube Edelstein visitor mine lasts about 20 to 30 minutes and is limited to a maximum of ten participants. Admission is free, and donations are welcome. The mine is about 10°C; warm clothing is recommended. The visit is not suitable for strollers or wheelchair users. Check on site whether a walking frame is suitable. As tour, access and admission details may change, check them before your visit.
Getting there and other tours
Free parking for the Wäller Tour Bachgeflüster is listed at the Protestant Gustav Adolf Chapel Atzelgift/Luckenbach. Check the parking information before travelling. One public transport option is to take the train to Hachenburg, followed by a bus journey of about six minutes to Kloster Marienstatt. Timetables may change, so check the current connection before you set off.
Cyclists will also find a route of their own: the Westerwald-Lahn Cycle Route passes through Luckenbach and Atzelgift, then continues through Hachenburg. The Wäller Tour hike and the cycle route therefore differ in both mode of transport and route.
