Kürrenberg: Hiking, Mountain Biking and History
Accommodation in Kürrenberg
If you are looking for a hotel in Kürrenberg, you can plan your trip around a range of interests: forest hikes, a mountain biking and freeride trail, or local history. The wider destination of Mayen also offers urban cultural attractions. The routes vary in length and profile, making it easy to choose a specific focus for your trip.
Forest trails and a variety of routes
Kürrenberg is right next to the Mayen city forest and offers numerous circular hiking trails with viewpoints overlooking the Eifel and the Nitztal valley. The 5.3 km Reiningweg trail passes through the Kürrenberg forest, loops around the Bleiberg and offers views of the Nitztal valley. This circular hike combines forest sections with a clearly described route around the Bleiberg.
The wheelchair hiking trail is shorter, at about 3.2 km. It is flat, with only minor changes in elevation. The hike takes about an hour and starts and ends at the car park on the Reiningweg. It is considered easy and is particularly suitable for wheelchairs, strollers and walkers. There are numerous places to rest and two shelters along the trail. The warmer months, especially April to September, are recommended for this hike. Compared with the 5.3 km Reiningweg, it offers a separate, shorter route option specifically described as suitable for a range of mobility aids.
For mountain biking and freeriding, there is the official MY-Trail in Kürrenberg, a district of Mayen. The trail is just under 500 metres long, making it significantly shorter than the hiking trails mentioned above. Another forest attraction is the Vulkanpark climbing forest. It is located between Mayen and Mayen-Kürrenberg on the B 258, in the heart of the forest in the eastern Eifel.
In the wider destination of Mayen, the day hike on the Traumpfad Förstersteig starts in Mayen-Kürrenberg. The circular hike passes through several stream valleys and offers panoramic views of the Eifel. Alongside the trails through the Kürrenberg forest, visitors can therefore choose between a circular hike described as a day tour and a short mountain biking trail as different focuses for their trip.
Church and local history
The Catholic Church of St. Bernhard in Mayen-Kürrenberg was built in 1900/1901 as a neo-Romanesque hall church. Another chapter in the town's history dates back to 1551: at that time, the innocent Kürrenberg women Veiten Wittib, Heuser Anna, Emmerich Hey, Girhatz and Kirsten Jammers, among others, were executed at the stake. The church and historical record add a cultural dimension to a stay alongside the forest trails, without requiring another route plan.
Culture in the wider destination of Mayen
In the wider destination of Mayen, Genovevaburg Castle is a landmark. It stands on a rocky outcrop above the marketplace. The late Gothic castle consists of an upper castle with the 34-metre-high Goloturm tower and a lower-lying outer castle. Genovevaburg Castle houses the EifelTotal and German Slate Mine exhibitions of the Eifel Museum. These architectural and museum features provide a distinct focus on urban culture alongside Kürrenberg's nature and hiking attractions.
Large sections of Mayen's town walls have been preserved, and a restored defensive walkway can be accessed as far as Genovevaburg Castle. Every summer, the Mayen Castle Festival transforms Genovevaburg Castle into a venue for theatre, music and socialising. The courtyard of the Old Prison House also becomes an open-air venue for the Castle Festival during the summer months, hosting theatre, music and other cultural events.
There are several ways to explore Mayen's town centre: guided town walks are available on request, and the historic town tour takes around 90 minutes. With the Hearonymus app, you can start a digital town tour whenever you like and play information about the sights. This lets you choose between a guided tour, available on request, and a digital tour that you can start independently.
