Different types of hiking routes meet in Löf: the Rabenlay Trail is a circular route, two Moselsteig stages use the town as their endpoint or starting point, and the Würzlaysteig leads from Lehmen to Löf. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth first considering the route type and landscape.

Hiking: Circular Route, Themed Trail or Stage

The Traumpfädchen Löfer Rabenlaypfad is a moderately difficult circular route covering 4.72 kilometres. Its start and finish are at the sports ground in Löf. These details make it a clearly defined option if you would like to include a circular route in your travel plans.

On the Moselsteig, Löf is the endpoint of Stage 21 and the starting point of Stage 22. Stage 21 ends in Niederbachstraße, near the church or the Moselle bridge. On the way to Löf, it descends through dense boxwood stands and the Kehrbachtal valley. Stage 22 begins in Löf and leads via Alken to Kobern-Gondorf. You can therefore choose between a stage that ends in Löf and a route that starts there.

The Würzlaysteig offers a different kind of route: this linear themed trail on the Mosel-Erlebnis-Route follows narrow paths above Lehmen’s steepest vineyard slopes on its way to Löf. Unlike the circular route, this trail ends in Löf after starting in Lehmen. Its vineyard landscape and narrow paths give the trail its own distinctive character.

Views and Landscapes on the Kanaul

The Kanaul is a 242-metre-high ridge and viewpoint. From there, views extend across the Moselle and over the surrounding towns; the Kanaul is also a popular hiking destination. From its southern side, you can descend into the Nachtigallental valley. Boxwood bushes grow along the trail. On the Lower Moselle, the northernmost edge of the boxwood’s distribution range is found here—a landscape detail that adds to the view of the vegetation.

Several ground depressions are also visible on the Kanaul. They date from the final phase of the Second World War, are more than a metre deep and can be several metres in diameter. Thus, the ridge combines scenic views and hiking landscapes with a visible trace of history.

Another nearby viewpoint lies above Hatzenport: the Rabenlay offers views of the steep vineyard slopes and the Moselle valley. There is a shelter, a barbecue area and reclining benches. This viewpoint can be reached from Löf railway station. The Rabenlay above Hatzenport is a separate place and should not be confused with the Löfer Rabenlaypfad.

Culture in the Wider Destination of Mayen-Koblenz

In the wider destination of Mayen-Koblenz, historic and industrial heritage sites offer a different focus from the hiking trails in Löf. Genovevaburg Castle in Mayen was built in 1280 by Heinrich von Finstingen, Archbishop of Trier. In Bendorf, Sayner Hütte is an anchor point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage and the only monument in Rhineland-Palatinate to hold this distinction. Following restoration work, modern exhibitions and multimedia displays invite visitors to explore; guided tours and creative workshops are also offered.
