Oberfell combines several themed trails with views of the Moselle and local cultural attractions. When planning your trip, you can choose what to focus on: route length, views or historic sites.

Three routes with the same start and finish

The Green, Red and Blue HVV routes are 4.9, 6.4 and 7.9 kilometres long. All three start and finish above St. Nicholas Church in Oberfell. This makes it easy to compare the route lengths; the routes also differ in their waypoints.

  • The 4.9-kilometre Green Route passes, among other places, along the Liebespfad and by the Kneipp footbath, the Waldelefant, the Celtic wall and the viewing platform. It also crosses the Bleidenberg plateau.
  • The Red Route is 6.4 kilometres long. It follows the Panorama Trail and passes the Lebensturm on Schildberg, the wayside cross and the Wachsnilles shelter. The Ameisenweg and KurfĂĽrstenruh shelter are also along the route.
  • At 7.9 kilometres, the Blue Route is the longest of the three. Its waypoints include the Panorama Trail, the Lebensturm on Schildberg, the Rotläufje and the shelters on Dickenberg.

Views of the Moselle and trails of legend

The “Bleidenberger Ausblicke” Dream Trail starts at the church in Oberfell and climbs a slope covered in vineyards. Along the way, you can enjoy views of the Moselle. The Bleidenberg viewing platform is on the plateau of the same name and offers far-reaching views over the Moselle Valley. The “Sagenhafte Weg” follows a different theme, tracing old legends through and around Oberfell.

Local history museum and traditions

The Old Rectory in Oberfell now houses a small local history museum as a cultural centre, featuring, among other things, archaeological finds from the Bleidenberg plateau. If you plan to visit the museum, check access arrangements in advance. Religious tradition also shapes the village: a solemn procession on Trinity Sunday passes through the forest to the Church of the Holy Trinity on Bleidenberg. The day is observed as a public holiday in Oberfell.

Culture in the wider destination of Mayen-Koblenz

The wider destination of Mayen-Koblenz also offers a broader historical perspective. In Mayen, Genovevaburg Castle was built in 1280 by Heinrich von Finstingen, Archbishop of Trier; it is one of the town’s landmarks. Sayn Ironworks is an anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage and the only monument in Rhineland-Palatinate to receive this distinction. Following restoration, it invites visitors to explore its modern exhibitions and multimedia presentations; it also offers guided tours and creative workshops. Sayn Abbey was founded around 1200, and its abbey church was consecrated in 1202. Exterior paintings dating from around 1255 are considered the best-preserved of the High Middle Ages in Germany.
