Baar is in the Mayen-Koblenz district of Rhineland-Palatinate, near the Nürburgring. Two hiking trails offer different starting points for planning a stay: the Wanderather Trail and the 7 Villages Trail. Their landscapes, stops and planning information focus on different aspects.

Wanderather Trail: valleys, heaths and pilgrimage sites

The Wanderather Trail starts at the church in Baar-Wanderath and leads through fields and meadows and over wooded heights towards Welschenbach. Its scenery includes quiet valleys with babbling streams as well as juniper and broom heaths. The juniper heaths on Kramershardt, on the southern slope of Hohe Warte, are particularly notable.

The trail also has religious connections: it follows part of the Jodokus pilgrimage route, and a detour to the St. Jost pilgrimage chapel is possible. Before taking the detour, check whether the chapel is accessible, as access conditions may change. The Schwarze Madonna meditation site is next to a stream; there is a spring and a small bridge there.

7 Villages Trail: a loop through Baar

The 7 Villages Trail is a circular hiking route connecting Baar’s seven districts. It starts and ends in Baar-Wanderath. The full route is approximately 13 kilometres long and takes about three and a half hours to walk. You can start at other points along the route and divide it into several stages. The time estimate applies to the complete loop; if you split it into stages, plan according to the section you choose.

Along the way, the trail passes a small wayside shrine. In some sections, the signage may be incomplete, so download the GPX track and map in advance. As route details may change, it is worth checking the trail information again before setting out.

The trails’ character is key to choosing between them: the Wanderather Trail focuses on heathland, stream valleys and pilgrimage sites; the 7 Villages Trail offers a loop through all seven Baar districts, with approximate distance and walking-time information. Other starting points and the option to divide the route into stages give you additional ways to plan your loop.

Culture in the wider Mayen-Koblenz destination

The wider Mayen-Koblenz destination also has cultural sites with their own historical significance. Genovevaburg is one of Mayen’s landmarks; it was built in 1280 by Heinrich von Finstingen, Archbishop of Trier. Sayner Hütte is an anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage and the only monument in Rhineland-Palatinate to receive this distinction. Following restoration, it invites visitors to explore its modern exhibitions and multimedia presentations; guided tours and creative workshops are also available.

Sayn Abbey also has its own historical timeline: it was founded around 1200, and its abbey church was consecrated in 1202. Its exterior paintings from around 1255 are considered the best-preserved examples of High Medieval painting in Germany. The Geyser Museum in Andernach focuses on natural history: its five exhibition areas explain how the world’s tallest cold-water geyser works.
