Accommodation in Gimbsheim
Gimbsheim as a destination for nature, cycling and swimming
These themes give your stay different focal points. If you enjoy spending time outdoors, the landscape, lake and routes take centre stage; if you are interested in regional produce, asparagus farming and vineyards are also part of the picture.
Protected landscape and Pfarrwiesensee
The Gimbsheim Old Rhine covers 160 hectares and was designated a nature reserve in 1977 because of its distinctive flora and fauna. For a trip focused on landscape and biodiversity, this is a clear connection to the area: the nature reserve and its natural assets take centre stage here.
Pfarrwiesensee borders Gimbsheim and is a public swimming lake with a large sandy beach. Here, two different interests come together: the Old Rhine is about protected flora and fauna, while the lake offers swimming and a beach. Facilities and rules may change seasonally; check local notices before your visit.
Cycling routes with different details
Gimbsheim lies on the left-bank Rhine Cycle Route; the Mühlenradweg runs from Framersheim to Gimbsheim and is 42.4 kilometres long. The route descriptions differ, which can help you choose: one places Gimbsheim on the left bank of the Rhine, while the other gives a specified distance between two named places. Local cycling routes mostly follow agricultural tracks, where you may encounter farm vehicles. Check the route and local conditions before setting off.
Asparagus and winegrowing
Gimbsheim is associated with asparagus farming, including the name “Gimbsheim asparagus.” Wine is grown in the quality-designated vineyards Sonnenweg and Liebfrauenthal. This agricultural connection adds another dimension to the nature and cycling themes. Agricultural produce and its availability depend on the season, so plan for asparagus and wine accordingly.
More to explore in the wider Alzey-Worms destination
Alzey-Worms is a destination for day trips and holidays. The prehistoric and early-history exhibition at the Alzey Town Museum presents the cultural history of central Rheinhessen, from the Neolithic Age through the Bronze, Iron and Roman periods to the Merovingian period. The period covered spans more than 6,000 years.
Another exhibition at the museum focuses on the geology and palaeontology of the Mainz Basin. Minerals, especially fossils, help visitors trace its development over millions of years.
The landscape of the wider destination also includes Petersberg, between Gau-Odernheim and Bechtolsheim. It is 246 metres high, covered in vineyards and offers sweeping views over the Wonnegau and the surrounding hills.
In and around Flonheim are white trulli, small vineyard buildings constructed by itinerant workers from Lombardy. In Flonheim, the trullo on Adelberg can be reached on foot via the Hiwweltour Aulheimer Tal; tables and benches stand right beside the trullo.
Geistermühle is a historic mill complex with half-timbered buildings and a fully preserved watermill; guided mill tours are available. The Alzey Art & Culture Trail runs through the vineyards and features 20 works of art and 22 vineyard huts.
