Saulheim: Wine, History and Countryside
Accommodation in Saulheim
Saulheim combines vineyards with historic streetscapes, guided walks through the town and paths through the countryside. When planning your stay, you can focus on different interests: wine and panoramic views, the history of Nieder-Saulheim or a cycling loop. The Mühlbachaue also offers a different perspective on the town.
Vineyards and Views
The Hiwweltour Saulheimer Hölle trail passes through Saulheim’s Hölle and Schlossberg vineyards. Along the route, there are panoramic views of the Donnersberg, Soonwald, Rheingau, Feldberg and Odenwald. It combines vineyard scenery with wide-ranging views; no particular pace or duration is specified.
Wine tastings and walks through the vineyards are also available locally: Weingut Kösterhof offers both by appointment. Weingut Mario und Lydia Dechent offers wine tastings in its vinotheque and also has a historic vaulted cellar. Silvaner, Riesling, Burgundy varieties, Sauvignon Blanc and various red grape varieties grow in the Saulheim vineyards of Hölle, Schloßberg and Probstey, as well as in Stadecker Lenchen.
Saulheim is one of the larger wine-growing municipalities in Rheinhessen. In 2025, the town is listed in tenth place among this group, with a total of 545 hectares of vineyard area. This figure indicates the scale of wine-growing in the town; it does not describe individual wineries or what each one offers.
Local History and Historic Buildings
The Lange Stein is the largest menhir in Rheinhessen and a cultural heritage monument. Traces of settlements and graves from the Neolithic, Iron Age and Roman periods have been found in the surrounding area. These different periods also make the site interesting to visitors keen to learn about early settlement and archaeological remains.
The Römer stands in the centre of Nieder-Saulheim, surrounded by the historic town hall and two Neo-Gothic churches. The town hall is notable for its stair tower, spiral staircase and Renaissance roof. One of the Protestant churches preserves a 13th-century Gothic baptismal font, a 15th-century Gothic pulpit and a Rococo organ dating from 1728. The townscape offers a chance to discover architectural styles and features from different centuries.
A life-size stone statue of the Knight Hundt stands in the centre of Saulheim and has been regarded as the town’s landmark since 1987. Those wishing to learn more about local history and the milling tradition can join guided tours of historic Nieder-Saulheim and along the Saulheimer Bach. Tours are also available in English and French.
The local history museum is housed in a former manor house. It features 19th-century interiors and traditional crafts such as cooperage, shoemaking and weaving. Check current access arrangements before visiting.
Countryside and Activities
Between the two historic town centres lies the restored Mühlbachaue, a park and natural floodplain landscape with streams and a diverse range of wildlife and plant life. Its features include paths, seating and viewpoints, opportunities for wildlife watching and a boules court. The floodplain offers a distinct focus alongside the vineyards and local history.
Cycling circuits start in Saulheim and follow paved farm and cycle paths with no motor traffic. The routes also include climbs and offer far-reaching views, rest stops and places to stop for refreshments. The vineyard route and the cycling loop therefore differ both in their described landscape and in the route features mentioned.
