Alzey-Worms: Exhibitions, Vineyards and Trails
Accommodation in Alzey-Worms
Fossils in the museum, vineyard cottages, and trails featuring art or geological history offer different ways to experience the culture and landscape of Alzey-Worms. Alzey-Worms is a destination for day trips and holidays.
Exhibitions from geological history to the Roman era
The prehistory and early history exhibition at the Alzey City Museum showcases the cultural and historical development of inner Rheinhessen. It spans more than 6,000 years, from the Neolithic period through the Bronze, Iron and Roman ages to the Merovingian period. The geology and palaeontology exhibition offers a different perspective on time. It focuses on the Mainz Basin, whose development over millions of years can be traced through minerals, especially fossils.
The white trulli are among the distinctive cultural landmarks in and around Flonheim. These vineyard cottages were built by migrant workers from Lombardy. The Geistermühle is a historic mill complex with half-timbered buildings and a fully preserved watermill; guided mill tours are offered there. About 60 gravestones stand in rows at the Jewish cemetery in Flonheim, mostly made of Flonheim sandstone.
The BohnErzWeg also brings history to life along a route connecting Dittelsheim-Heßloch, Framersheim, Gau-Heppenheim, Hochborn and Monzernheim. The trail leads to mining sites and a reconstructed ore-washing facility; information boards provide insight into this historical context.
Vineyard landscapes and walking trails
In the Alzey region, gently rolling, vine-covered hills are as much a part of the landscape as wooded areas, including the state forest in Vorholz near Offenheim. Petersberg, between Gau-Odernheim and Bechtolsheim, is 246 metres high, covered in vines and offers sweeping views across the Wonnegau and the surrounding hills. This brings vineyard panoramas and woodland landscapes together as contrasting features.
The Alzey Art & Culture Trail winds through vineyards and features 20 works of art and 22 vineyard cottages. The trullo on Adelberg in Flonheim can be reached on foot via the Hiwweltour Aulheimer Tal; tables and benches are right beside the trullo. The two destinations offer different highlights in the vineyard landscape: one is an art and culture trail, while the other leads to the trullo on Adelberg.
South of Eckelsheim, the “Strandpfad der Sinne” (“Beach Path of the Senses”) follows the coastal slope of the former Steigerberg island. Within sight of the wave-cut cliff at the Eckelsheim gravel pit, it passes a sequence of rocks, boulders, gravel and sand, as well as plants from geological history. This geological landscape theme complements the cultural and vineyard trails.
Cycling routes through varied landscapes
The Selztal Cycle Path follows the Selz through the rolling hills of Rheinhessen. The Mill Cycle Path connects historic mills and passes through attractive wine villages. Hills and a succession of beautiful views define the Hiwwel Route, while the Rheinterrassen Route runs through idyllic wine villages and vineyard slopes. The Zellertal Cycle Path branches off into the Zellertal valley. The routes therefore have different described highlights to consider when choosing: river and rolling countryside, mills and villages, or recurring scenic views. When planning your ride, check current trail conditions and signage.
Cycling services in Alzey-Worms include e-bike rentals and charging, as well as services for inflating tyres and carrying out simple repairs. Before setting off, check the exact location of the services you need.
Wine and a light bite in Flonheim
At the Klosterhof wine shop in Flonheim, you can sample wines and enjoy them by the glass. Coffee, homemade cake and a light snack to accompany the wine are also available. This adds an enjoyable stop to the selection of trails and cultural destinations, making Flonheim appealing to travellers who want to set aside time for regional wines and a break alongside their excursions.
