Warstein combines marked hiking trails, destinations in the Bilsteintal, the Hillenberg climbing arena and the Warsteiner Montgolfiade. When planning your trip, you can choose between a very easy circular hike, longer hiking trails, mountain biking and climbing; the event may also be important when choosing your travel dates. If you are looking for a hotel in Warstein, these different interests can help you shape your plans.
Hiking in Warstein
There are 540 kilometres of marked hiking trails in the Warstein municipal area. The total length may change if the trail network is revised. For individual tours, distance and route are specific criteria for making your choice.
The 16.5-kilometre Hiking Trail 1 passes through the Bilsteintal, Paradies and Hubertusquelle to Lörmecke Tower, then continues to the Lörmecke Tower car park and Sedansteich. Hiking Trail 2 is shorter at 6.3 kilometres; it leads from the Lörmecke Tower car park via Kapellenplatz to Lörmecke Tower. The two trails therefore differ both in length and in the sequence of the named stops.
On the moderately difficult Lörmecke Tower circular hike, you pass the ITH XXL bench after about 2.5 kilometres; the destination is the 35-metre-high tower. From there, panoramic views stretch from the Hochsauerland across the Haarstrang and the Westphalian Bay to the Teutoburg Forest.
Nature and activities in the Bilsteintal
The Bilsteintal is an information centre for Arnsberger Wald Nature Park. Red and sika deer, raccoons, foxes, wild boar and lynx live in the wildlife park. The animal population may change. The Bilsteintal can be reached by public transport on bus route R76; check current travel information before setting off.
The Bilsteintal circular hike is a very easy walk along mostly natural trails on the Bergbau WaldKulTour Route. Seven information boards along the route provide information about mining in the forest. The route is recommended for families with children. After the hike, a visit to the forest playground in the Bilsteintal is a good option.
For a mountain-bike outing, there is the 17.9-kilometre Bilsteintal MTB circular tour No. 47, with 269 metres of elevation gain. Thirty-six per cent of the route runs along natural trails, while the rest follows gravel forestry roads. Trail conditions may vary. The Bilsteintal archery course is run by Bilsteintal e.V. and lies west of the wildlife park, beyond the L 735.
Climbing and other attractions
The Hillenberg climbing arena in Warstein offers routes on several rock faces for sport and alpine climbers, as well as active families and beginners. The grades range from 3 to 9; the rock faces are over 50 metres high.
The Bullerteich pond lies in the northern part of the Warstein district. Opposite it is the Trockelsknäppchen spring. It was discovered during the Second World War, while an air-raid shelter was being built in the limestone rock, and can now be viewed through windows.
The Warsteiner Montgolfiade attracts numerous visitors every year, including people from outside the city. If you would like to plan your stay around the event, check the specific event dates.
