Discover Heinsberg: Art, History and Walks
Accommodation in Heinsberg
Heinsberg’s local character spans art and regional history, historic buildings and a lakeside loop. You can choose different focuses for your city exploration: BEGAS HAUS highlights the Begas family, while St. Gangolf and Burg- und Kirchberg represent different historical periods. Lago Laprello offers a loop of around three kilometres on foot or by bicycle. Distinctive houses and a historic city walk also shape the city’s character.
Art and regional history at BEGAS HAUS
BEGAS HAUS, a museum of art and regional history in Heinsberg, is now housed in the Torbogenhaus and Haus Lennartz. Its permanent exhibition displays around 130 works by more than four generations of the Begas family. A visit to the museum therefore brings together works of art and a look at an artistic family across several generations. The digital museum guide, mGuide-begas, is available through guest Wi-Fi on your own smartphone or on a tablet that can be borrowed free of charge. Check its availability before your visit.
St. Gangolf and the architectural history of Kirchberg
The provost church of St. Gangolf on Kirchberg is a medieval landmark of Heinsberg. Beneath its high choir is a 13th-century crypt with remains of medieval frescoes. The church is also home to the high tomb of the last lords of Heinsberg, considered one of the most valuable sculptural works from the mid-15th century. The remains of the medieval castle can be seen on Burg- und Kirchberg; parts of the early modern fortifications have been preserved around St. Gangolf. This brings together evidence from different periods: the medieval castle remains and parts of the fortifications from the early modern period.
Townhouses, façades and remembrance
The Grüne Haus is Heinsberg’s oldest surviving townhouse and was first documented in 1637. This date marks its first documented mention, not a confirmed construction date. The von Mirbach’sche Haus dates from the 18th century and is located in Heinsberg’s city centre. Its architectural features include an elaborate Baroque façade, numerous tall windows and an ornamented carriage entrance. Lünenschloss is an elaborately designed Renaissance building from the 17th century. The Protestant Christuskirche is another architectural feature: in 2013, it became the world’s first non-residential building to be modernised to certified passive house standards. A memorial plaque at Hochstraße 89 commemorates the former synagogue of Heinsberg’s Jewish community.
City walk, park and Lago Laprello
The historic Heinsberg StadtRUNDGANG comprises twelve StadtPUNKTE from which you can begin the walk. While these points offer several possible starting places, the loop around Lago Laprello is around three kilometres long and can be completed on foot or by bicycle. The lake also has a boathouse and a bathing area with a sandy beach. This gives you different ways to plan your exploration: a city walk with several possible starting points or a loop with an approximate distance.
Burg- und Kirchberg is also a city park with new paths, green spaces and an open-air stage. It is also a venue for numerous events. As event dates vary, check the dates for your travel period in advance. This lets you make the historic sites, the park and the leisure activities at Lago Laprello independent highlights of your city exploration.
