Woodlands and heathland in the Schwalm-Nette Nature Park, a diverse protected landscape, and places shaped by art and industrial history give Heinsberg a range of different facets. As you plan, you can combine nature experiences with museum visits or focus on a cycling or hiking tour. The options differ considerably in landscape, theme and route length.

Heathland, marshes and circular trails

The Teverener Heide is a 450-hectare nature reserve in the Heinsberger Land region. It extends across the municipality of Gangelt and the towns of Geilenkirchen and Ăśbach-Palenberg. Open heathland meets marshy wetlands, quiet lakes, inland dunes and woodland here. This means the protected area brings together several different natural landscapes.

Four circular hiking trails explore the Teverener Heide: the Moor Circular Trail is 5.8 kilometres long, the Heath Circular Trail 6 kilometres, the Lake Circular Trail 7.1 kilometres and the Great Circular Trail 9.4 kilometres. The starting points are at the designated Scherpenseel, Grotenrath and Hohenbusch car parks. The distances therefore range from 5.8 to 9.4 kilometres; it is worth checking current trail conditions before setting out.

The Schwalm-Nette Nature Park in the Heinsberg district also has certified premium hiking and walking trails. These trails add more hiking and walking options to the specific circular routes in the Teverener Heide. When comparing different tours, their length and type of trail provide useful points of reference; conditions on individual routes may change.

Cycling with an artistic connection

Tim Berresheim’s picture journey offers a different perspective on the Heinsberger Land. The approximately 90-kilometre cycling route follows established cycle paths and includes 14 stops. There, the artist’s homeland is brought together with his digital works. Unlike the circular hiking trails in the Teverener Heide, this is a longer cycling route connected by an artistic theme. When planning, you can therefore choose between several stated hiking distances and a route of around 90 kilometres.

The Meinweg area offers circular hiking trails with a range of themes. The national park region has routes there ranging from 5 to 13 kilometres, with varying levels of difficulty. Themes include cultural history, food and drink, and nature; examples include mill walks, the Smugglers’ Route and town walks. Length, difficulty and theme give you different ways to compare the tours.

Art and mining history

At the BEGAS HAUS in the town of Heinsberg, visitors can learn about four generations of the Begas artistic dynasty. The collection is presented in a historic ensemble of buildings dating from the 16th to the 18th century. The focus is on the artists’ family and its works, while the buildings provide a historical setting for the museum visit.

Schacht 3 in Hückelhoven offers a different view of the region’s history. There, visitors can go underground to discover how hard coal was mined at the former “Sophia-Jacoba” colliery until 1997. The museum visit and underground experience offer different emphases: at BEGAS HAUS, you encounter an artistic dynasty and its collection; at Schacht 3, the history of hard-coal mining.

Nature watching and a cross-regional landscape

Around TĂĽschenbroicher MĂĽhle in the TĂĽschenbroich district of Wegberg, visitors can observe, among other species, kestrels, common buzzards, kingfishers, nightingales and golden orioles. Which species can be seen depends on the season. Depending on your interests, you can choose between a tour through a landscape with different habitats and observing wildlife at a specific location.

The Meinweg area is a landscape of woodland, heathland and marshes connecting the Heinsberg and Viersen districts in North Rhine-Westphalia with the Dutch province of Limburg. The landscape therefore crosses both a district and a national border. Alongside its varied themed circular hiking trails, the Meinweg area brings nature and culture into tour planning, although individual trails need not share the same focus.
