Specific sights in Bocket include the parish church of St. Joseph, the remains of a windmill, and a wayside cross at the edge of the village with views across the fields as far as the Breberen Mill.

The building history of St. Joseph’s Parish Church

St. Joseph’s Parish Church is a three-aisled Neo-Gothic building. It was built from 1877 to 1889 to plans by Lambert von Fisenne, replacing a chapel dating from the 16th century. “Three-aisled” describes a church interior divided into three aisles; “Neo-Gothic” identifies its architectural style. The nave lies between two side aisles, making it easy to picture the three-part layout of the interior.

The church also has an organ dating from 1892, made by the Müller, Reifferscheid workshop; it is a listed monument. The organ’s date marks a distinct historical point in relation to the church building, whose construction spanned 1877 to 1889. The architecture and organ are therefore related topics, but they date from different periods.

Windmill Ruin and Views

The remains of a windmill in Bocket were built in 1840 as a tower windmill of the “Erdholländer” type. “Tower windmill” describes the construction, while “Erdholländer” identifies the specific type of mill. Unlike the parish church, the focus here is on the technology of a historic mill; the date 1840 places it before the church’s construction period of 1877 to 1889.

At the edge of the village, a wayside cross offers views across the fields as far as the Breberen Mill. This view provides a different perspective from the buildings: it encompasses the fields and the mill in Breberen within a wider landscape.

A dated event

One specific event with a confirmed date is the Bocket Spring Fair. It took place from 27 to 29 April 2024 in a marquee on the village square in Bocket. If you are planning a future trip and would like to include a later event, check the dates with the municipality.

More to discover in the wider Waldfeucht destination

The wider Waldfeucht destination also offers its own mill and walking-trail attractions. The Waldfeucht Mill on Kapellenstraße was built in 1897 as a tower windmill of the Erdholländer type. It can be compared with the remains of the windmill in Bocket: both are tower windmills of the Erdholländer type; the Bocket mill was built in 1840 and the Waldfeucht mill in 1897. They share the same construction and type, but their dates set them apart.

The walking trails also have different focuses. Walkers can explore Waldfeucht’s old town fortifications on a circular route through hedge-lined paths and cottage gardens. The Forest Fairytale Trail is also a circular route and appeals to both children and adults. Thus, one circular route focuses on the town fortifications, while the other trail has a distinct appeal.
