Wegberg offers a range of themes to help you plan your trip: Tüschenbroicher Forest is known for its wetland, trails and opportunities to observe nature, while mills and museums offer insights into local and technical history. If you are looking for hotels in Wegberg, these highlights can help you decide what interests you during your stay.

Nature and Trails in Wegberg

The Tüschenbroicher Forest nature reserve in the municipality of Wegberg includes the sources of the Schwalm and forms an important wetland. The Tüschenbroicher Loop is designated as a premium walking trail: it is 3 kilometres long and has a total elevation gain of 15 metres. Another hiking trail through the forest passes the oil mill, the upper pond and Tüschenbroich Mill.

The routes at the Wegberg Nordic Walking Park are different: its seven routes total 41 kilometres and follow forest and meadow paths, as well as partly paved farm tracks. Information boards at the start and end points provide route guidance and overview maps of the trails. This makes it possible to distinguish a single, precisely measured loop from a park with several routes, without treating the park’s total distance as the length of a single route.

Nature observation also has its own seasonal appeal in Tüschenbroicher Forest. Along sunken paths, you can spot spring flowers and several species of woodpecker; deer are often seen at the edge of the forest. Fishing and boating are also possible in the forest.

Mills and the Waterside Landscape

Tüschenbroich Castle and the large mill pond are historic cultural landmarks in the Tüschenbroicher Forest nature reserve. The Schwalm flows right beside Wegberg Mill, where it once powered two mill wheels. The historic Wegberg Mill in the town centre serves as a venue for clubs and associations.

Schrofmühle in Wegberg-Rickelrath offers a different focus: visitors can watch grain being milled and oil being pressed, with advance registration. At the Schrofmühle Mill Museum, the permanent exhibition “Wegberg and the Valley of Mills” uses 17 large-format pictures to provide a direct introduction to the individual mills in the municipal area. The demonstrations and exhibition thus explore different aspects of the subject of mills.

The Wegberg Mill Route is an approximately 42-kilometre cycling and hiking trail through the landscape of Schwalm-Nette Nature Park. It links several historic mills, which can be visited along the way. The route offers another way to combine the history of mills with a longer journey.

Museums, Flax and Chapels

At the Flax Museum in Wegberg-Beeck, a former Frankish barn traces the development of flax processing, from sowing to weaving linen. Flax is grown there every year, and demonstrations are held; visitors can also try working with preserved equipment. For groups of ten or more, the Beeck Local History Association offers guided tours alongside coffee and cake, as well as a traditional Rhenish coffee table. The museum thus combines the history of a material with practical demonstrations and an offering specifically for groups.

Also in Wegberg-Beeck is the Museum of European Folk Costumes, which is run by the Beeck Local History Association. Another cultural and historical destination is the Holy Cross Chapel in Kipshoven. It is one of the oldest architectural monuments in the Wegberg municipal area, was probably built in 1492 and features unique medieval polychrome paintings inside.

Those wishing to focus on chapels, churches and religious monuments can follow the Wegberg Chapel Route, an approximately 40-kilometre hiking and pilgrimage trail around Wegberg. By comparison, the approximately 42-kilometre Mill Route is designed for cycling and hiking and links historic mills. The routes are similar in length; their themes and the specified ways of travelling distinguish them.
