Stubbendorf: Manor House, Park and History
Accommodation in Stubbendorf
Manor House and Park
The Stubbendorf manor house and the adjoining park are both listed as historic monuments. The listed park is characterized by ancient trees; the manor house also has a small wood with stately beech trees.
Building History and Restoration
After the original manor house burned down around the turn of the century, the present manor house was built in 1904 by Paul Korff for Hellmuth von Prollius and his wife Toni. Its architectural style is considered unusual for the region. The manor house in Stubbendorf near Tessin is among the manor houses that Korff built anew or redesigned in Mecklenburg in 1903/04. The present house was built in 1904; the period 1903/04 covers Korff’s new buildings and architectural alterations in Mecklenburg. The Seger couple discovered the house in a very dilapidated condition and restored it in keeping with its listed status. Sustainability and authenticity were taken into account in the process.
Historical Connections
In 1820, Ernst Alban married Margarete Wendt, the daughter of a landowner, at Stubbendorf. In 1823, the first steam engine from Stubbendorf was installed at the Karnatz oil mill in Rostock. The events highlight different aspects: the wedding took place directly at Stubbendorf, while the steam engine has a historical connection to the oil mill in Rostock.
Ehmkendorf and the Recknitz Valley
In Ehmkendorf, which also belongs to the municipality, the manor house was built around 1790 as a dairy farm for the Stubbendorf estate. The entire historic Ehmkendorf estate complex is listed as a historic monument. Compared with the present manor house in Stubbendorf, built in 1904, the dairy farm marks an earlier building phase in the municipality.
The Stubbendorf manor house is near the Recknitz Valley Nature Reserve. The municipal area includes the Recknitz Valley near Ehmkendorf, a glacial meltwater valley with great biodiversity. The valley is suitable for walks; the region around the Recknitz Valley is also suitable for cycling and horseback riding. The valley also invites visitors to explore on foot, on horseback and on the water. A network of hiking trails leads from Zarnewanz to Ehmkendorf through the Recknitz Valley, offering opportunities for recreation and relaxation. At the regional level, the river valleys of the Warnow and Recknitz form part of the coastal hinterland in the Rostock region.
Another landmark in the municipality is the well-known wild apple tree in Apple Tree Avenue, roughly halfway between Stubbendorf and Ehmkendorf. It is estimated to be around 400 to 500 years old. The tree has since split apart; its condition may change over time.
