Village Church and Archaeological History
The village church of Thelkow is a fieldstone building in which brick was also used in places. It was built around 1260 to 1280, during the transition from the Romanesque to the Gothic style. Its notable features include the richly articulated south portal, star rosettes and a keystone bearing the Lamb of God. The approximate construction period places the church in its stylistic context, while the features mentioned offer a closer look at its design.
Lieper Burg is an early Slavic hillfort dating from the 8th century in the municipality of Thelkow and is part of the Lieper Burg Landscape Protection Area. The megalithic tombs on the Recknitz near Liepen date back much further: they were built between 3500 and 2800 BCE and are among the best-preserved structures of the Late Neolithic. Information boards at the megalithic tombs explain how the structures were built and describe the way of life of the first farmers and livestock breeders to settle there. In chronological terms, the timeline thus stretches from the Late Neolithic, through the early Slavic hillfort, to the 13th-century village church.
