Jürgenshagen: Nature on the Beke, history in Gnemern
Accommodation in Jürgenshagen
Jürgenshagen brings together specific points of interest for those interested in cultural history and nature: in Gnemern there are a water castle and manor house, along the Beke a riverside hike, and at the Old Wheelwright’s Workshop, present-day village life with a history of earlier uses.
Gnemern Water Castle and Manor House
Gnemern Water Castle was built under Prince Borwin, probably between 1218 and 1223, to protect the land trade route between Rostock and Wismar. The complex in Gnemern is one of the few water castles still preserved in Mecklenburg. Its history can therefore be understood through two specific themes: the approximate period in which it was built and its protective role along a named trade route.
Gnemern Manor House stands on a river island surrounded by water in Jürgenshagen. Its location draws attention to the interplay between the building and the river landscape. For a thematic overview, Gnemern thus offers both historical connections and a striking setting in the landscape.
Hiking along the Beke
A small bridge near the water castle crosses the Beke and leads to a hiking trail that follows the river. The Beke’s undisturbed course and the distinctive features of its flora and fauna make a hike there a nature experience. The Green Route is a nature experience between Gnemern and Groß Gischow in Jürgenshagen. Here, the river and nature take centre stage, clearly distinguishing this focus from Gnemern’s architectural and trade history.
The Old Wheelwright’s Workshop and village life
The Old Wheelwright’s Workshop was built before 1900 as a farm building for keeping chickens, ducks, geese and pigeons. Today, it is a place for people to meet, fostering and shaping cultural and social life in the village. Thus, the same place brings together its former agricultural use and its present-day role in the village community. The Old Wheelwright’s Workshop can be rented for family celebrations, company parties and company anniversaries. If you are planning to use it for such an event, check availability in advance.
