North-Western Pomerania: Bodden Coasts, Birdlife and Manor Gardens
Accommodation in North-Western Pomerania
At Richtenberg Lake, nature restoration, conservation and the seasonal rhythms of waterbirds come together. The restored lake lies between Franzburg and Richtenberg and is a nature reserve. Various waterbirds breed, stop over and spend the winter there; several viewing points offer insights into the restoration project. The site thus highlights both the development of the landscape and its importance for birdlife.
Coasts, Forests and Protected Nature
The Fischland-DarĂź-Zingst peninsula is part of the coast of North-Western Pomerania. Cliffs and accretion coasts, windflats, and highly indented Bodden coasts with peninsulas, spits and islands shape this coastal landscape. The North-Western Pomeranian Forest Landscape, stretching between Marlow and Stralsund, offers a different natural setting. Middle spotted woodpeckers and red-breasted flycatchers breed in its deciduous woodland; the white-tailed eagle also breeds there, which is a special feature.
Well-known nature reserves in North-Western Pomerania include Ahrenshooper Holz, Ribnitzer GroĂźes Moor, Kormorankolonie Niederhof, Unteres Recknitztal, Grenztalmoor, and Borgwallsee and PĂĽtter See. Together with Richtenberg Lake and the forest landscape, they offer a range of nature-focused themes for planning your trip: from Bodden coasts and wetlands to deciduous forests. If you are particularly interested in birds, Richtenberg Lake also offers a seasonal guide to the different stages of breeding, stopovers and overwintering.
Gardens and Autumn Excursions
Treckeltied is an annual event organized by the AG Gartenpfad Nordvorpommern of the LAG Nordvorpommern e. V. Since 2016, it has showcased the gardens and parks of the Gartenpfad Nordvorpommern in autumn. Over an autumn weekend, visitors can explore the various gardens and parks by bicycle, car or on foot. For the 2026 Treckeltied program, the ADFC is offering free guided cycle tours along selected gardens in North-Western Pomerania. If you are planning a visit or tour, check the event details for your chosen year in advance.
Another specific reason to visit is the OstseemĂĽhle Langenhanshagen: on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., visitors can watch the oil pressing and sample various oils and flours. Check the visiting hours again before you set off. That way, you can plan a visit to the mill into your day, rather than only taking its set opening hours into account once you arrive.
Manor Houses, Parks and Cultural History
The listed and lovingly restored Alt Guthendorf manor house dates from 1796. The Alt Guthendorf manor park is located nearby, with very old apple and pear trees, some of which are unidentified varieties. The natural-style garden at the Alt Guthendorf estate provides information about pollinator-friendly flower meadows, herb beds and nesting opportunities. Here, old fruit trees meet gardening themes that draw attention both to the cultural landscape and to nature-friendly design.
Schlemmin Palace Park is a landscaped park covering more than 18 hectares, with the neo-Gothic Schlemmin Palace nestled within it. Visitors can admire tree giants over 500 years old, including oaks, sturdy beeches, black locusts and larches, along a circular path through the park. The park’s size and circular path offer a different way to experience the interplay of architecture and a landscape shaped over time.
Since 1971, the Mecklenburg Salt Museum in Bad SĂĽlze has been housed in the former administrative building of the Grand Ducal Saltworks, the Old Salt Office. The half-timbered building was constructed in 1759. Also in Bad SĂĽlze, the listed spa park invites visitors to stroll among the trees and visit the nearby salt meadows. The museum and spa park offer different highlights: the history of the saltworks in a historic building, and walks in the park and to the salt meadows.
