Userin between the lake and the national park

Lake Userin lies on the eastern shore of Userin and is part of Müritz National Park. It is about four kilometres long and one kilometre wide. The lake thus connects a specific local setting with the wider landscape of the protected area. In Userin, there is also a bathing area, a small half-timbered church and a section of the pilgrimage route. When choosing where to stay, you can decide whether you would prefer to focus on water, architectural history or hiking.

Bathing and fishing at Lake Userin

The bathing area at Lake Userin in the village of Userin was redesigned in 2013 and has an extensive non-swimmer area. This is a specific feature for anyone planning to spend time by the water. In the village of Userin, fishing in the lake is also permitted from a boat, from existing structures and from open areas along the shore.

Half-timbered church and pilgrimage route

The small church in Userin stands on a hill and was consecrated in 1778. It is built using half-timbering, a style characterised by a wooden framework with filled-in panels. A bronze bell dating from 1747 hangs in the free-standing bell tower. There are 31 years between the bell’s date and the church’s consecration—two distinct historical reference points. The church invites visitors to pause and pray, and is also considered a venue for concerts.

The Userin–Wesenberg section of the pilgrimage route begins at the church. It follows the paved Groß Quassower Weg towards Groß Quassow, is marked with an M and is about 12.5 kilometres long. These details help you plan the section as a specific route. You can also access the pilgrimage route to Userin via a hiking trail along Lake Userin. This provides an access option to Userin in addition to the section described above.

The wider setting: Mecklenburg Lake District

As a broader travel destination, the Mecklenburg Lake District adds other types of landscape to the local picture. Müritz National Park is part of the Mecklenburg Lake District and is characterised by forests, marshes, lakes and extensive meadows. The Müritz National Park Hiking Trail runs through the park’s landscape in nine stages, along lakes, through ancient forests, past inland dunes and to the source of the Havel. This is on a different scale from the individual Userin–Wesenberg section: the nine stages divide up the national park hiking trail, while the approximately 12.5 kilometres refer to a specific section of the route.

Certified nature and landscape guides offer informative tours through Müritz National Park, including guided walks in the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest of Serrahn and tours from the water.
