Blankensee can be planned from several perspectives: Lake Wanzka and the bathing area reflect the local landscape, the railway trail offers a variety of path surfaces, and a nearby viewpoint provides a view across the landscape. When planning the route, it is worth distinguishing between the total length, the trackbed length, and the signposted hiking section.

Lake, views and orientation in Blankensee

Lake Wanzka is a glacial channel lake, meaning a body of water formed during the Ice Age; its surface area is 2.03 km². The Blankensee bathing area is located on the lake and includes a volleyball court. The lake as a landscape feature and the volleyball court as a specific detail at the bathing area thus offer two different points of reference for planning.

The covered Panoramablick Rödliner See viewpoint is located in the wider area around Blankensee. From there, you can look out over Lake Rödlin and the surrounding landscape. In Blankensee itself, the Am Bahnübergang rest area is on a meadow at the railway crossing, right next to State Road 34. These points offer different kinds of orientation: views over the lake in the wider area, or a rest area whose location can be identified by the railway crossing and road.

The railway trail: distances, surfaces and hiking section

The railway trail runs between Rödlin and Blankensee. It is about 40 km long, while the trackbed itself is 36.3 km long. This distinction is useful when planning: the total length of the trail and the length of the trackbed are different measurements. The railway trail runs mainly along shared cycle and footpaths, farm tracks and minor roads.

About 32 km of the trail are mostly surfaced with asphalt or paving stones. The remaining section has a water-bound surface and is easy to ride. The surface is therefore not uniform throughout. A shorter section is also relevant when planning a tour: between Blankensee and Warbende Gras, a 3.5 km section of the railway trail is signposted as a hiking trail. The railway embankment is interrupted at a former bridge, where there are wooden steps. Routes, surfaces and signage can change. Check the current signs and trail conditions before setting out.

Nature and other destinations in the Mecklenburg Lake District

In the wider travel destination of the Mecklenburg Lake District, Müritz National Park offers a different natural setting. Forests, moors, lakes and expansive meadows define the park. The Müritz National Park Hiking Trail covers the area’s landscape types and special features over nine stages: it runs along lakes, through old-growth forests, past inland dunes and to the source of the Havel. Certified nature and landscape guides offer informative tours through the national park, including guided visits to the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest in Serrahn and tours from the water.

Also within the wider travel destination of the Mecklenburg Lake District, the Damerower Werder bison reserve is located on a peninsula in Lake Kölpin and in the Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heath Nature Park. Visitors can observe the animals there. The reserve also has a woodland discovery trail with climbing opportunities, an ant house, an exhibition with touch-and-see panels, and a dendrophone. Animal watching and the discovery trail therefore offer a different focus from the lake and trail sections in Blankensee.

For another regional perspective on waterways, waterway travellers can set out from Neustrelitz town harbour and explore MĂĽritz National Park and the Strelitz Small Lakes region via the Upper Havel Waterway. The Rechlin Aviation Technical Museum is also located in Rechlin Nord. These destinations and activities are part of the wider travel destination of the Mecklenburg Lake District and should be distinguished from the local points of reference in Blankensee.
