Klein Vielen combines a striking building with a park and landscape ensemble steeped in history. For a clearer picture, it is worth looking at two aspects: the Jahn Chapel and Klingenberg define the area, while other natural attractions and trails are located throughout the municipality of Klein Vielen.

The Jahn Chapel and Its History

The Jahn Chapel is a neo-Gothic brick building with an octagonal floor plan, dating from 1851. Pinnacles, tracery, and decorative bands adorn the octagonal structure. Its history is closely linked to Eduard Rudolph Jahn: after burying his wife Johanna and daughter Sophia on Klingenberg, he began building a memorial chapel in the woods. The building and the memorial site are therefore intertwined.

An exhibition in the chapel covers the origins and genealogy of the Jahn family, as well as the building’s history, its decay, and its rescue. The question of whether Friedrich Wilhelm Buttel was the chapel’s architect is also among the exhibition topics. If you are planning a visit, check in advance whether it will be possible.

Park, Avenue, and Klingenberg

A path leads through the old estate park and a chestnut-and-linden avenue to Klingenberg and the Jahn Chapel. Eduard Jahn had this route laid out and planted a closely spaced avenue of small-leaved lime trees and chestnuts along it. The remains of the old estate park, the avenue, and the entire Klingenberg are protected as a garden monument. A fieldstone wall, which Jahn had built around Klingenberg, completes the historic ensemble.

The chapel is thus part of a larger setting that includes a park, path, trees, and memorial site. Those interested in architectural history can connect the neo-Gothic design of the brick building with the history of Klingenberg; those focusing on the landscape will find other defining features in the avenue and the protected park remains.

Natural Attractions in the Municipality of Klein Vielen

The municipality of Klein Vielen is home to Klein Vielener See, a glacial ribbon lake about 2,300 meters long and up to 550 meters wide. The lake is a eutrophic, shallow body of water with extensive reed belts, adjacent alder carrs, and wet meadows. It is designated a nature reserve and serves as a breeding and resting area for numerous wading and water birds. Northern geese, duck, and merganser species also use it as a wintering and roosting site.

Wedensee is also a habitat for birds. It has partly silted up and is characterized by wide banks of reeds and alder carr. Its protected shoreline and the adjacent grasslands provide habitat for numerous bird species; cranes and hen harriers nest there. The two lakes thus represent different, but equally nature-rich, aspects of the municipality.

Hiking Trails and Getting Your Bearings

In the Rosenholz and Zippelower Bachtal nature reserve, hiking trails lead through a landscape that is especially appealing in spring, particularly in April and May. Near Adamsdorf, in the municipality of Klein Vielen, there is a roughly 4.2-kilometer nature trail with several stops. Topics range from plant and animal life in settlements and fields to habitats in meadows and forests. Four kilometers of the Alte Salzstraße also run through the municipality.

For context on Müritz National Park, it is important to note that the municipality of Klein Vielen is not considered a traditional gateway to the park, unlike Granzin, Boek, or Federow, for example. At the same time, it borders the western section of the park to the west, and small portions of the municipality lie within the national park. The Serrahn section of the national park is about 20 kilometers southeast of the municipality. The B 193 provides road access to the municipality’s localities. This information helps distinguish the location of attractions within the municipality from directions to the national park.
