Klein Upahl on Lake Upahler See
Accommodation in Klein Upahl
Klein Upahl lies in an attractive hilly landscape right on Lake Upahler See, which is designated as a nature reserve. The village was first mentioned in a document in 1263. An estimated 500 to 1,500 geese use the lake as a roosting site; northern species also occur during the winter half of the year. The first recorded mention is a historical reference point, while the figure for geese is seasonal.
Lake Landscape and Jasenberg
Jasenberg lies south of Klein Upahl and is 94 metres high. Its slopes offer impressive views of Lake Upahler See and Lake Lenzener See, as well as the adjoining woodland areas of the protected area. An observation platform on Jasenberg offers a sweeping view over Lake Großupahler See. A field path leads from Klein Upahl to the observation tower on Jasenberg. The lake in the village and Jasenberg to the south thus provide two distinct points of reference for orienting yourself in the landscape.
Routes by Length and Starting Point
An 11-kilometre route from Klein Upahl to Lohmen starts at the Klein Upahl Agricultural Machinery Museum and first leads to Jasenberg. From there, it continues towards Holensee, with lovely views of the lake, which lies in a deep hollow. Check trail conditions before setting out, as they may change.
A 19-kilometre hike leads from Boitin directly to Klein Upahl’s village centre along woodland, field and meadow paths. Along the way, you can see part of the Upahler and Lenzener See nature reserve, which is difficult to access. This hike is longer than the route to Lohmen and has different start and end points: Klein Upahl is the destination on this hike, while it is the starting point on the Lohmen route. When choosing, consider both the route length and the direction from which you reach or leave the village.
