Jördenstorf offers several different reasons to visit: the village church with its architectural history, Peenehof Köppen with its fish farm, and a cycling route that passes through the town. If you are looking for a hotel in Jördenstorf, you can choose the focus of your stay based on whether you are interested in church architecture, fish farming or a bike ride. The three themes are clearly distinct: the church features architectural details, Peenehof combines fish farming with a nature park setting, and the route has a specific distance.

Jördenstorf Village Church: History and Architecture

Construction of Jördenstorf Village Church probably began in the 13th century. It is considered an important early church building from the transition between the Romanesque and Gothic periods. The church is therefore interesting both for its presumed date of origin and for its position between two architectural styles.

The nave is made of brick and decorated with a round-arched frieze. This type of frieze is an ornamental band made up of a series of arches. The narrower, vaulted chancel, by contrast, is made of fieldstone. The nave and chancel thus differ both in shape and in the materials used. The brick nave features the round-arched frieze as a continuous ornamental band; the recessed fieldstone chancel contrasts with it through its different material and spatial form.

The square west tower was probably built early on as a defensive tower. Above the nave is a medieval hall roof with unusually closely spaced wooden trusses and diagonal supports. Alongside the masonry, the interpretation of the tower as a defensive structure—phrased with appropriate caution—and the roof’s supporting structure are distinct architectural features.

The church also has an organ by FRIESE (III), dating from 1878. Alongside the building, which probably dates back to the 13th century, the organ offers a clearly dated point of reference from a later period. A monument to the First World War stands at the eastern entrance to the churchyard. The building’s history, the organ and the monument reveal different historical layers of the church.

Peenehof Köppen and the Nature Park

A second point of interest is Peenehof Köppen, at Klein Wüstenfelde 9a, 17168 Jördenstorf. It lies on the edge of the Mecklenburg Switzerland and Lake Kummerow Nature Park and has a fish farm. The farm is supplied with spring water, which is collected in a large pond. The combination of springs, pond and fish farming sets Peenehof apart from the architectural focus of the village church. Cycling Route Through Jördenstorf

The “In the Footsteps of the Windmills” loop passes through Jördenstorf and continues in the direction of Poggelow and Stierow. It is 36.9 kilometres long and rated easy. The route therefore offers a clearly measured activity with a specified course, while the church and Peenehof focus on architectural history and fish farming, respectively. Distance and difficulty are relevant when planning your ride. As map details may change, check the current route before setting off.
