Sehestedt: Moor, Salt Marshes and the Wadden Sea
In Sehestedt, the Floating Moor, salt marshes and Jade Bay take center stage. The National Park Visitor Station explores these nature and coastal themes seasonally through an exhibition and a range of activities. When planning your trip, the season for the activities and the different time estimates for the Salt Marsh Experience Trail are particularly useful to know.
The Floating Moor and the Visitor Station
The Floating Moor near Sehestedt now covers only about nine hectares. A boardwalk through the moor leads to a birdwatching hut. This makes the landscape and birdwatching two themes you can enjoy together in Sehestedt without having to take a longer circular route.
From May to September, the Sehestedt National Park Visitor Station is open far beyond the dike on the eastern side of Jade Bay. An exhibition, aquarium, model of the moor and laboratory provide information about Sehestedt’s Floating Moor, nature and dike construction on Jade Bay. During the season, visitors can also take part in wrack surveys, mudflat walks and birdwatching. Guided tours follow the Salt Marsh Trail and go into the moor; some are followed by microscopy or craft activities. The season is therefore an important consideration if you want to plan your stay around the station and its activities.
The Salt Marsh Experience Trail: Route and Themes
The Salt Marsh Experience Trail is a five-kilometer circular route. It starts at the dike access near the Floating Moor, crosses the salt marshes to the Wadden Sea of Jade Bay, and returns via Sehestedt. The hike is estimated to take about one and a half to two hours. The route length and approximate walking time offer two different points of reference for planning: you can take into account both the length of the loop and the time allotted for it.
More than 30 information panels along the route explain how Jade Bay was formed and the importance of the salt marshes as a breeding and resting area for birds. Other topics include how plants and animals adapt, the Wadden Sea, and the cultural and historical aspects of land reclamation and dike construction. The trail thus combines nature topics with the history of the coastal landscape. If you are particularly interested in these connections, the trail provides a clear thematic complement to the observation and information opportunities at the moor.
Mudflat Experiences and the Jade Bay Beach
The Sehestedt Mudflat Experience is a starting point for both the Salt Marsh Experience Trail and the boardwalk in the Floating Moor. Sehestedt Beach on Jade Bay is designated as a bathing area in Lower Saxony. These two features extend the trails and nature themes into the coastal area: one helps you find the routes mentioned, while the other identifies the beach as a designated bathing area.
More to Explore in the Wider Jade Destination
The wider Jade destination offers other distinct cultural and leisure activities. The Trinity Church in Jade has had its present appearance since the late 17th century. The Schönhof Gallery is located in a Gulfhaus dating from 1872 and has an adjoining blue-printing studio. Since its founding in 1991, the Künstlerhaus Jan Oeltjen e.V. association has focused primarily on the work of artist Jan Oeltjen. These attractions are part of Jade and should not be confused with Sehestedt’s nature offerings.
The Jaderpark amusement park is also part of the leisure offering in the wider Jade destination, with a climbing and water world, numerous rides and encounters with exotic animals. Alongside Sehestedt’s nature and coastal themes, Jade thus offers its own distinct cultural and leisure activities. If you choose Sehestedt as your destination, you can focus on the salt marshes, the moor and the visitor station’s seasonal activities; the other attractions mentioned are part of the wider Jade destination.
