Brake (Unterweser) combines its connections to the Weser with port facilities, cycling routes and traces of local history. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these different aspects separately: Stadtkaje offers views of the harbor and shipping traffic, Harriersand is a recreational area for the town, and historic buildings and museums explore the history of Brake and its shipping industry.

Harbor, Stadtkaje and the Weser

The Braker seaport quay begins north of the town center. It stretches about two kilometers downstream along the Weser. It includes large grain silos, cranes, warehouses and open storage areas. The Stadtkaje waterfront promenade is a pleasant place to linger; from there, you can look out over the port facilities, shipping traffic and Harriersand on the opposite bank. This offers two ways to appreciate the harbor: its extensive facilities and the view from the riverbank. The description of the quay lists its facilities; it does not indicate access to operational areas.

Harriersand: Island and recreational area

Harriersand is an approximately 11-kilometer-long island in the Weser and Brake’s local recreational area. Its sandy beach and abundant trees make it a pleasant place for walking, cycling and relaxing. The island offers a different kind of experience from Stadtkaje: the waterfront is defined by harbor views and shipping traffic, while Harriersand invites you to spend time in nature among its beach and trees. The “Guntsiet” passenger ferry runs from the ferry landing at Brake’s Stadtkaje to Harriersand. If you are planning to take the ferry, check the current schedule with the operator.

Cycling routes through Brake and the Wesermarsch

The long-distance Deutsche Sielroute and Weser Cycle Route pass right through Brake. In the broader Wesermarsch destination, the Deutsche Sielroute is a cycling loop that lets you experience marshland and moorland, sluices, harbors and towns along the Weser and North Sea coast. Its flat route is particularly suitable for bike rides with children or on an e-bike. This regional context refers to the Wesermarsch; it is not an additional description of the quay or the town of Brake. During your stay, you can use the two long-distance cycling routes that pass through Brake as practical points of reference for a cycling trip.

Historic houses, a church and maritime collections

The Fischerhaus was built in 1731 by Addick and Elisabeth Addicks and is the oldest surviving house in Brake. Original wooden beams and hand-painted wall tiles have been preserved in the building. St. Bartholomew’s Church in Golzwarden is the oldest church in Brake; it dates from 1263. These dates refer to different historical landmarks: 1263 for the church and 1731 for the Fischerhaus. You can explore St. Bartholomew’s Church on a guided tour; the Tourist Information Office can provide details about dates.

The Unterweser Maritime Museum presents the 200-year history of Brake’s harbor. The Braker Telegraph houses part of the maritime museum of the Oldenburg Unterweser region. The telegraph tower displays, among other things, ship models, ship portraits and nautical instruments. The Arp Schnitger Center offers another perspective on the life and work of an individual: four information boards, along with audio and video presentations, explain the significance of the organ builder, who was born in Schmalenfleth. Visits and tours of the center are available on request.

Tours with different arrangements

Brake regularly offers expert-guided tours on the town’s maritime past. Groups can also book town walks and night watchman tours for other dates by arrangement; with advance notice, they can be conducted in Low German. For planning, it is best to ask the Tourist Information Office about current dates and booking options. This lets you distinguish between regularly scheduled tours and a date arranged for your group.
