Ruhwarden: Village History, Art and Trails
Accommodation in Ruhwarden
Ruhwarden is a rural destination where village history, art and trails through the landscape each offer a different perspective. When planning your visit, it is worth looking at both the village’s attractions and its surroundings: local connections to art range from a sculpture to an open-air gallery, while trails in the region take in the Wadden landscape and various place names.
Local History and Community
Ruhwarden is a historic terp village first documented in 1220. This date provides a specific historical reference point for the village’s history. Community initiatives, meanwhile, turn the focus to village life today: the Ruhwarden Citizens’ Association is still responsible for organizing the Easter bonfire, greening the village and putting up the maypole. Historical context and ongoing community involvement thus sit side by side—two different perspectives on Ruhwarden.
Art in the Village
The sculpture “Die Perle” (“The Pearl”) stands at the entrance to the village. Steel spheres with a maritime history inspired the artistic process and were also used as material. Both the sculpture’s form and the history of its material are therefore central to its distinctive character.
Another form of artistic expression took shape in 2022 as part of the “Gezeiten Kunst- und Kulturwochen” (“Tides Art and Culture Weeks”) event series: Ruhwarden residents painted garage doors. This gave rise to the Garage Gallery Ruhwarden, an open-air gallery. While the artistic approach to “Die Perle” is shaped by its material and maritime connection, the Garage Gallery grew out of the painted garage doors.
Galerie Am Wehlhamm is another art venue in Ruhwarden. The “Kleine Welten” (“Small Worlds”) model-making exhibition is also located there. Its focus differs from that of the sculpture and painted garage doors: here, model-making takes center stage. The cultural offering thus covers a variety of art and exhibition themes rather than being limited to a single form.
Agriculture as Another Theme
The family-run Hof Rothehenne dairy farm offers a tour with Bauer Kuck. Visitors get to know the farm and find out where the milk comes from. If you would like to include agriculture in your stay alongside village history and art, this tour offers a firsthand look at a dairy farm. Its focus is distinctly different from that of the art venues: the farm and the origin of the milk take center stage.
Wadden Landscape and Routes
Near Ruhwarden, the four-kilometer Langwarder Groden circular trail leads through the Wadden landscape between Fedderwardersiel and Langwarden. Along the way, you’ll find tidal creeks, salt marshes and opportunities for birdwatching. The four-kilometer length gives you a clear idea of the trail’s extent; the landscape and wildlife observation offer a different focus from the village’s art venues.
Two routes also include Ruhwarden in different ways. The circular “TOUR 01 – Kleiner Rundweg um Tossens” (“TOUR 01 – Short Circular Route around Tossens”) follows the dike to Ruhwarden. “TOUR 08 – von Tossens nach Ruhwarden” (“TOUR 08 – from Tossens to Ruhwarden”) passes through Ruhwarden and also through Tossens, Roddens, Beckmannsfeld, Mitteldeich and Süllwarden. The routes’ different itineraries are useful for orientation: TOUR 01 highlights the stretch along the dike to Ruhwarden, while TOUR 08 names several places it passes through.
