Eckwarden is an old terp village at the southern tip of the Butjadingen peninsula, about two kilometres inland from the existing dike line. Its historic centre, with St. Lamberti Church and a separate bell tower, gives the village a distinctive focal point. When planning your visit, it is also worth distinguishing between Eckwarden and Eckwarderhörne, a few kilometres away: the beach and Wadden Sea are right by the water there. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Eckwarden, these different attractions can help guide your plans for excursions.

Historic Centre and St. Lamberti Church

St. Lamberti Church is a brick fortified church that dates mainly from the 13th century. Its bell tower stands separately by the road and is older than the church. The interior also has special ties to regional art history: St. Lamberti is among the churches in the region particularly richly adorned with works by woodcarver Ludwig Münstermann. The organ was built in 1856 by Johann Claussen Schmid of Oldenburg.

You can also combine a visit to the village centre with the old schoolhouse and a small park: along with the church and bell tower, both are featured stops on the TOUR 04 circular route. The planting of the Pentecost tree, Carnival and village festivals are part of Eckwarden’s local traditions. If you would like to attend one of these festivals, check the specific dates in advance.

Cycling Around Eckwarden

The easy TOUR 04 circular route is 12.46 kilometres long and is suitable for bicycles and e-bikes, as well as for families and children. It runs around Eckwarden and its surroundings; the listed stops include the village centre with its church and bell tower, the old schoolhouse, a small park and Eckwarden’s small, active harbour. The route thus combines local history with other points of interest in a circular tour.

A longer cycling route is the fifth stage of the North Sea Cycle Route: it is about 64 kilometres long and runs from Eckwarderhörne to Wilhelmshaven in a semicircle around Jade Bay. Check route conditions and signage before setting off. The two routes differ considerably in length and course, so you can choose the tour that best suits your planned day of cycling.

Wadden Sea, Beach and Eckwarderhörne

Eckwarderhörne is a few kilometres from Eckwarden. A large green beach stretches right by the water, with views of the JadeWeserPort in Wilhelmshaven. Various guided walks across the Wadden Sea depart from here throughout the year. The beach itself also changes with the tide: at low tide, it becomes a tidal flat where you can discover the flora and fauna. At high tide, it is an inviting spot for swimming, paddling and various water sports.

The Oberfeuer Preußeneck lighthouse at Eckwarderhörne is designated as an observation tower. Check access before your visit. An activity specifically for younger children is the Wattforscher event at the Wadden Sea guide hut in Eckwarderhörne. It is aimed at toddlers and preschool-age children and includes an approximately 300-metre exploration of the tidal flats lasting around 45 to 60 minutes. As event schedules may vary, check the dates in advance.

Getting Here and More Nature Trails

The MS “Harle Kurier” passenger and bicycle ferry connects Wilhelmshaven with Eckwarderhörne. It operates seasonally and follows a timetable; check the latest departures before travelling. The nearest bus stop is Eckwarden Fähranleger. If you are planning to travel by bus, check the latest services in advance as well.

In the Butjadingen area, Langwarder Groden offers a four-kilometre circular walking trail and a two-kilometre nature discovery trail. Both provide further opportunities to explore nature in the region; take the tide conditions into account when planning your visit.
