Discover Achim: Half-timbered houses, church and Weser Cycle Route
Accommodation in Achim
When looking for hotels in Achim, you can plan your trip around specific interests: architectural and urban history, art in the town centre, walks, cycling along the Weser, or a weekly market with a wide range of goods. This makes it possible to decide in advance whether your stay should focus on historic buildings, a town walk, or getting active along the Weser.
Church, farming quarter and half-timbered houses
St. Laurentius Church is the oldest building in the town of Achim; it was first mentioned in a document in 1257. It is located in Achim’s farming quarter. The area around the church and the Clüverhaus is known as the “old village”. The church is open every day, on weekdays and weekends, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for silent prayer, lighting a candle or a moment of quiet. Check the opening times before your visit.
The Clüverhaus is a typical Lower Saxon two-post half-timbered farmhouse dating from 1824. Today it houses a café; check whether it is open before your visit. Its construction style and specific year of construction give the house a distinctive architectural place in Achim’s local history. Thus, in the “old village”, the church first mentioned in a document and a 19th-century farmhouse represent different historical periods.
Windmill and traces of the town’s history
The Achim Windmill is considered a landmark of the town. It is 29 metres high, has two storeys and is built as a gallery Dutch windmill; its tower is thatched. It has been open to visitors as part of mill tours since 1969. Tours are available on request, and interior visits are also possible on designated annual Heritage Days. If you are planning a visit, arrange a suitable time in advance.
The Hünenburg ring wall marks a different historical period: it was built in the 11th century and is still largely preserved. Achim’s former trades are also present at specific locations. The façade of the Riekes Honigkuchenfabrik recalls the town’s former gingerbread-making and cigar-making traditions. A small cigar-makers’ room can be seen in Achim Town Hall. The orchard meadow maintained by the Achim NABU group offers another perspective on traditional fruit growing; its contributors received the Lower Saxony Environmental Award in 2014.
Walks, art and cycling
Numerous sculptures, monuments and fountains in the town centre invite you to take an art walk. A guided walk through the old village passes a Lower Saxon two-post house and an old farmstead, and can be booked for a date of your choice. Another themed option is a tour with Achim night watchwoman Martha van Acheim, which shares interesting facts about the town’s past and present. The two experiences have different focuses: one highlights buildings along the route, while the other centres on the town’s history and present day.
For cyclists, around 17 kilometres of the Weser Cycle Route run through Achim along the Weser. The Lower Saxon Mill Route also passes through the town. Both indicate routes in Achim; the length given for the Weser Cycle Route is approximate. Which route suits your plans depends on whether you would rather follow the river or the mill route.
Weekly market and marina
The Achim weekly market has a history spanning more than 100 years. More than 50 stalls line the pedestrian zone on two days each week. The selection includes, among other things, fruit and vegetables, honey, asparagus, meat products, Mediterranean fruit, smoked goods, hot meals, wood-fired bakery products, seasonal goods, plants and flowers. If you would like to plan a visit to the market, check the current market days.
The Achim-Uesen marina offers leisure boaters six guest berths provided by the boating club. If you would like to use a berth, check availability before you arrive. Along with the cycle route, walks and weekly market, it offers a range of activities and interests to help you plan your stay in Achim.
