Dörverden offers several distinct starting points for planning a trip: a windmill visible from afar, the technical facilities of the barrage and Ehmken Hoff cultural centre. The municipality also has cultural and historical points of interest, for example in Hülsen, Barme and Diensthop. The wider Verden destination offers further regional attractions. If you are looking for hotels in Dörverden, you can consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay.

Windmill, barrage and cultural heritage in Dörverden

Dörverden Windmill is visible from afar; it is not possible to visit the inside. The Dörverden barrage comprises a lock, a weir, a power station and a fish ladder. Thus, a striking windmill and a technical complex with four clearly identified components stand side by side in the town.

At Ehmken Hoff cultural centre in the village of Dörverden, two old, restored farmhouses have been reinstated as listed buildings. They serve as a cultural centre and meeting place. Various exhibitions are held there throughout the year, including a permanent exhibition on archaeological finds from the area. This brings together historic buildings and a cultural programme whose themes extend beyond the buildings themselves.

Culture and nature in the municipality of Dörverden

In Hülsen’s historic sheepfold quarter, ten sheepfolds are listed as an ensemble. Two are used as exhibition spaces for old farming and craft equipment; however, visitors can only see them from the outside. On baking days during the summer months, bread and butter cake are baked there in the traditional way. Visitors interested in the process are shown how the baking is done and how the oven works.

The history of potash mining is also represented in Hülsen. The Hülsen Cultural Association offers guided tours of surviving traces of this history. With objects, tools, salt cores, miners’ clothing, pictures, plans and graphics, the potash mining information centre gives an impression of the economic boom at the time and of life during that period.

In the district of Barme, the Wolfcenter provides information about wild wolves that have returned and are spreading across Germany independently. Barme was also once home to a medieval motte with a half-timbered tower, situated on a hill surrounded by a moat. In Diensthop, also within the municipality, visitors can look inside a replica burial mound. A vertical cross-section wall divides the mound in half; in front of it stands a massive oak log coffin.

Two other visitor attractions are associated with the waterways. A solar-powered ferry operates on the Aller in the municipality of Dörverden. If you plan to take it, check the current timetable in advance. At the Dörverden Weser weir, pedestrians and cyclists can cross the Weser from 15 March to 15 October. The crossing involves stairs; there are side ramps for bicycles. Check the current conditions before your trip.

Regional additions in the wider Verden destination

In the wider Verden destination, a cycling route, a protected area and historic architecture offer further options. The Aller Cycle Route in the district of Verden follows a circular route between Verden and Rethem. At the transition from the northern slope of the Verden dunes to the Halsebach valley, the “Dune Area and Halse Valley near Verden-Neumühlen” nature reserve is characterised by complex, closely interconnected biotope structures, as well as its distinctive character and beauty. There are designated walking trails there.

Etelsen Castle was built in the Historicist style. Its façade has been preserved in its original form; the halls, salons and corridors have been restored in the style of the period. In the wider region, these offer a range of options: a circular route between Verden and Rethem, designated trails through a protected area, and the architecture of a castle. These examples belong to the wider Verden destination and should not be confused with the features of the village of Dörverden.
