In the district of Verden, there is a range of options, from cycling routes and historic cultural sites to designated hiking trails. When planning, it helps to note the specific differences: route length, season and the special features of the places you visit.

Cycling routes and crossings in the district of Verden

In the district of Verden, the Aller Cycle Route follows a circular route between Verden and Rethem. The Wümme Cycle Route is on a different scale: the section of around 60 kilometres through the Wümme lowlands is part of the roughly 250-kilometre Wümme long-distance cycle route, which runs from the Lüneburg Heath to the Weser. It passes through the northern part of the district of Verden. The two figures therefore refer to a section and to the total length of the long-distance route.

The cycling network in the district of Verden is fully signposted. River crossings may also be relevant when planning a tour. The historic ferry between Otersen and Westen, near the Amtshaus, allows cyclists to cross the Aller on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 1 May to 3 October, shortening the route. Check the ferry times before planning your trip. Another crossing is possible at the Dörverden Weser weir: from 15 March to 15 October, pedestrians and cyclists can cross the Weser there. The route includes steps; side channels are provided for bicycles. Check the current conditions before setting out on this seasonal crossing.

Hiking trails and landscape

In the “Dünengebiet und Halsetal bei Verden-Neumühlen” nature reserve, the northern slope of the Verden dunes meets the Halsebach valley. The area is described as having complex, closely interwoven biotope structures and distinctive character and beauty. Designated hiking trails offer a way to experience the landscape on foot. Cycling routes and a protected area with hiking trails therefore offer options for different travel plans, rather than the same kind of outing.

Historic sites and culture

The Erbhof in Thedinghausen was built between 1619 and 1621 by Johann Friedrich, Archbishop of Bremen. This listed building is of significance beyond the region. Its restored ballroom is used for readings and concerts. Etelsen Castle offers a different architectural style: it was built in the historicist style and has an original, preserved façade, as well as halls, salons and corridors restored in the style of the period.

At the Ehmken Hoff cultural heritage site, two historic, renovated farmhouses serve as a cultural centre and meeting place. Various exhibitions are held there throughout the year, including a permanent exhibition on archaeological finds from the area. A windmill in Dörverden has also been renovated in accordance with heritage conservation principles and restored to working order.

In Diensthop, visitors can look inside a reconstructed burial mound. A vertical cross-section wall cuts the mound in half; in front of it stands a massive oak tree-trunk coffin. In Barme, a mound surrounded by a ditch recalls an earlier structure: a medieval motte with a half-timbered tower once stood on it. The two sites illustrate different ways of exploring history—a reconstructed interior view in one place, a former fortification in the other.

Insights into craftsmanship and regional history

The ten barns of the Hülsen Historic Sheep Barn Quarter are protected as a group of listed buildings. On baking days during the summer months, bread and butter cake are baked there in the traditional way; visitors interested in the process can learn about the baking methods and how the oven works. Check the baking-day dates before visiting.

The Hülsen Potash Mining Information Centre uses objects, tools, salt cores, miners’ clothing, pictures, plans and graphics to convey an impression of the economic boom at the time and life during that period. Those more interested in natural history can attend feeding demonstrations at the Wolfcenter Dörverden. Tours lasting about an hour offer insights into wolf biology and ecology. The approximate duration can help you fit this activity into your day’s plans.

The district of Verden offers a range of options for your stay: cycling routes with seasonal crossings, hiking trails in a nature reserve, and cultural sites with exhibitions, architecture and insights into earlier ways of life and work.
