Hasbergen: Hüggel, Views and Augustaschacht
Accommodation in Hasbergen
Hasbergen brings together trails and views on the Hüggel with the historical site of Augustaschacht. There are also guided tours of the Niehenke pottery and leisure activities at Freizeitland and the natural swimming pool. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to spend time on the trails and at the viewpoint, visit the memorial, or include one of the leisure activities.
Hüggel, Views and Trails
The Hüggel is a forested ridge between the municipalities of Hasbergen and Hagen am Teutoburger Wald, reaching around 225.6 meters above sea level. From the “Zur Schönen Aussicht” viewpoint, you can look out over the Hüggel and the municipality of Hasbergen. The viewpoint is on the Hüggel circular hiking trail and the geological nature trail; both trails can be reached from the “Roter Berg” hikers’ car park. This gives you a named starting point for the trails and a viewpoint located on both routes. Trail conditions may vary; check them before setting out.
Augustaschacht: Remembrance and Mining History
During the Second World War, the Augustaschacht pumping house served as a labor education camp. The pumping station building has been preserved almost unchanged and is considered an important monument to ore mining on the Hüggel. At Augustaschacht, artist Volker Johannes Trieb mounted charred tree trunks several meters long on the exterior walls. Above Augustaschacht is a memorial made of rusty metal steles. Here, the history of the camp and remembrance through the memorial’s design stand alongside the mining history of the pumping station building.
The Augustaschacht Memorial is accessible to visitors with disabilities, with the exception of the third upper floor. The memorial sites offer guided tours and workshops; advance registration is requested. Before your visit, check accessibility and confirm the program and registration arrangements in advance.
Workshop and Leisure Activities
At the Niehenke pottery, director Bernhard personally leads tours of the old and new workshops. If you would like to include this insight into the pottery’s work, confirm visitor arrangements with the workshop before your trip.
Freizeitland Hasbergen offers a sauna area, squash courts, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, and two bowling lanes. Hasbergen’s natural swimming pool has a large sunbathing lawn where you can relax and enjoy the sunshine. The offerings differ in focus: Freizeitland centers on sports and saunas, while the natural swimming pool offers a sunbathing lawn. Check the facilities’ current operating status before visiting.
Planning needs also vary: for trails on the Hüggel, the main consideration is the condition of each trail; for the memorial, bear in mind the registration requirement, and for leisure facilities, check current operations. Decide what you want to focus on during your stay before looking for a hotel in Hasbergen.
