Get to know Georgsmarienhütte through a range of themes: trails run through the city and its districts, while the park and museum offer a glimpse of nature and local history. When planning your stay, consider whether you’d like to focus on hiking, explore cultural trails or learn about the city’s steelmaking history.

Hiking and Cultural Trails

Five well-marked TERRA.tracks run through the city. Created in collaboration with the TERRA.vita Nature and UNESCO Geopark, the trails cater to different fitness levels and hiking distances. Route details may be updated, so check the latest information from the local authorities before setting out.

The cultural trails pass through the districts of Kloster Oesede, Holzhausen, Harderberg, Dröper and Holsten-Mündrup. They can be explored on foot or by bike, and there is no admission fee. One specific example is the cultural trail in Holzhausen: the suggested circular route is about seven kilometres long, and ten information boards explain the district’s history.

The two options have different focal points: the TERRA.tracks offer a choice of routes for different fitness levels and hiking distances. The Holzhausen cultural trail combines an approximate route length with a focus on local history. When planning, you can weigh up a route with interpretive stops against several hiking trails with varying levels of difficulty.

Kasinopark and the Teutoburg Forest

Established in 1872, Kasinopark is home to around 50 different exotic and native tree species. There is a water-treading facility at Holsteteich. The park thus combines a variety of trees with a specific place to take a break by the water.

The surrounding landscape is another distinctive feature: the wooded ridges of the Teutoburg Forest border the city of Georgsmarienhütte directly. The bistro terrace at the outdoor pool in Panoramabad Georgsmarienhütte offers a particularly good view of the Teutoburg Forest panorama.

Villa Stahmer and the history of steelmaking

Villa Stahmer houses the Museum of the City of Georgsmarienhütte. Its main focus is the city’s steelmaking history; an exhibition on the history of the steelworks is on the first floor. Work on the steelworks began in 1856 with the founding of a joint-stock company, which received financial support from King George V and his wife Marie.

The villa’s own history is also connected to industrial history: Robert Stahmer moved in there in 1900, close to his railway signal works in Oesede. The villa is one of the most beautiful houses in the Osnabrück district. A visit to the museum therefore combines the exhibition on steelmaking history with the building that played a part in Stahmer’s life.

Another destination within the wider Osnabrück travel region

The Saurierfährten Bad Essen-Barkhausen offer a different theme within the wider Osnabrück travel region. Fossilised dinosaur tracks can be seen on a cliff face there. The site also features two dinosaur replicas, detailed information boards and a circular trail. The signposted dinosaur trail at Saurierfährten is a 16-kilometre circular hiking route.
