Culture in the Wider Nienburg Destination
In the wider Nienburg destination, the Nienburg Museum offers a broad view across time: housed in three historic buildings, it presents the development of the Middle Weser region from the presence of the first people to the present day. Its main building is the Fresenhof, a manor house dating from the 16th century. The museum also includes the Asparagus Museum, the Biedermeier Garden and a lapidarium. The Neoclassical villa offers deeper insights into the 19th century. The museum thus brings together an account spanning many eras and individual thematic highlights.
Other historic sites in the wider Nienburg destination offer different points of interest. Schinna Monastery is located in the Schinna district of the municipality of Stolzenau and is a monument of significance beyond the region. Loccum Monastery is a religious house built in 1163. In BĂĽcken, the collegiate church of St. Maternian et St. Nicolai preserves important art treasures, including a triumphal cross from 1230 and richly illustrated stained-glass windows from the 13th century.
Barns, Mills and Town History
The historic barn quarter Im SchĂĽnebusch in Estorf preserves nine traditional barns. They house a local history museum with exhibitions on agricultural tools, rural domestic life, a bakery and the history of the village. Groups can arrange a rustic overnight stay in the Radler-Scheune by booking in advance. The Landesbergen Wedding Mill was built in 1872 and houses a small exhibition on local history. Both examples combine historic buildings with local history themes; in Estorf, there is also an overnight option specifically for groups and by prior arrangement.
The old town of Nienburg features half-timbered facades, Weser Renaissance facades and brickwork. The town has a 1,000-year history. Those interested in the historic townscape will find a different focus here than in the region’s exhibitions and individual buildings.
Experiences on the Water, by Bike and in the Park
Flotte Mittelweser offers sightseeing, experience and charter trips on the Weser and Aller rivers, with departures from Nienburg or Verden. Check the timetable before planning your trip. For a cycling trip, the Weser Cycle Route describes a 23.6-kilometre circular route between Landesbergen and Stolzenau. You should also check route conditions before setting off. The two options differ in their mode of transport and route length: the boat trip focuses on travelling along the rivers and the departure points, while the cycling trip features the named endpoints and circular route.
At the Dinosaur Park MĂĽnchehagen, visitors can see more than 300 dinosaur footprints that bear witness to a time around 140 million years ago. The park offers hands-on activities especially for young children, including the excavation of a 25-metre-long skeleton. Here, the focus is both on traces from prehistoric times and on a practical activity for young visitors.
