In the destination of Nienburg, you can shape your stay around the city’s history, museums and experiences along the Weser.

Museums and the Old Town

Nienburg’s Old Town brings together half-timbered facades, Weser Renaissance facades and brickwork. It is part of a historic city with a 1,000-year history. The Museum Nienburg offers a closer look at the development of the Middle Weser region: its three historic buildings cover a period stretching from the presence of the first humans to the present day. Its main building is the Fresenhof, a manor house dating from the 16th century. The museum therefore offers both a specific historic building and a broader overview of the region.

The museum also includes the Asparagus Museum, the Biedermeier Garden and a lapidarium. The Neoclassical villa offers deeper insights into the 19th century. These topics offer different points of focus: you can explore a single museum theme or consider the various components as a broader cultural program.

Buildings and Regional History

Other notable historic destinations can also be found beyond Nienburg’s Old Town. Schinna Monastery is located in the Schinna district of the municipality of Stolzenau and is a heritage-listed building of significance beyond the region. Loccum Abbey is a religious house built in 1163. In Bücken, the collegiate church of St. Maternian et St. Nicolai houses important art treasures, including a triumphal cross from 1230 and richly illustrated stained-glass windows from the 13th century. The dates help place these artifacts in time: the cross dates from the 13th century, as do the windows mentioned; Loccum’s religious house points to an earlier building history.

In Estorf, the historic barn quarter of Im Schünebusch preserves nine traditional barns. A local history museum there houses exhibitions on agricultural tools, rural domestic culture, a bakehouse and village history. Groups can spend the night in a rustic dormitory in a cyclists’ barn by prior arrangement. In Landesbergen, the Wedding Mill, built in 1872, houses a small exhibition on local history. These places combine buildings with insights into local history and past ways of life; if you are staying in a group at the cyclists’ barn, note that you need to book in advance.

Weser Trips, a Cycling Route and Dinosaur Tracks

The Mittelweser fleet offers sightseeing, adventure and charter trips on the Weser and Aller rivers, departing from Nienburg or Verden. If you would like to add a trip to your stay, check the timetable for your preferred date. Another way to actively experience the area is the 23.6-kilometer circular route on the Weser Cycle Route between Landesbergen and Stolzenau. Check the conditions before setting out on this route. The two options clearly differ in how you get around: one is a trip on the water, the other a signposted circular route with a stated distance.

At the MĂĽnchehagen Dinosaur Park, you can see more than 300 dinosaur footprints that date back to around 140 million years ago. There are hands-on activities specifically for young children, including the excavation of a 25-meter-long skeleton. The park combines a look at traces from the distant past with an activity expressly designed for young children. When planning your trip, you can consider this option as a distinct focus alongside the museums and historic buildings.
