With St. Lebuin Chapel, Pennigsehl offers a specific point of interest for a trip focused on architectural history. At the same time, the town, the surrounding landscape and other themes can be distinguished from one another within the explicitly broader Nienburg destination. The chapel is located in Pennigsehl; the following museums, buildings and activities belong to the larger Nienburg destination.

St. Lebuin Chapel in Pennigsehl

The chapel is a rectangular brick building. An extension is located on the north side, and a later addition was built in the northeast. It was constructed in 1963–65 to a design by architect Carl Christian Siebert from Hanover. When looking at the building, its basic shape and brickwork are therefore of interest, as are the additions on two different sides. The construction period and the addition can be distinguished: the northeastern addition was built later.

The chapel was consecrated on July 18, 1965, by LSup. Johannes Schulze. It is named after an Anglo-Saxon missionary of the 8th century. The construction period from 1963 to 1965 and the naming offer two different perspectives: one leads to the building’s origins, the other to a historical figure from a much earlier time. The chapel thus brings together local architectural history and a name that reaches far back into the past.

The Mainscher Heide heathland, on Sudholzer Weg in Liebenau, is located in the surrounding area of the destination. As a landscape, the Mainscher Heide offers a different point of interest from the chapel. The locations also differ: the chapel is in Pennigsehl, while the heathland is in Liebenau. If you include architectural history and landscape in your travel plans, you can consider these two different points of interest separately.

Culture in the broader Nienburg destination

In the broader Nienburg destination, the Museum Nienburg spans a wide arc of history. In three historic buildings, it presents the development of the Middle Weser region from the presence of the first people to the present day. The museum includes the Asparagus Museum, the Biedermeier Garden and a lapidarium; the Neoclassical villa offers deeper insights into the 19th century. The Fresenhof, a manor house dating from the 16th century, is the museum’s main building. It thus offers both an overview of the region’s development and individual thematic and historical perspectives.

Nienburg’s old town also combines various architectural features: half-timbered façades, Weser Renaissance façades and brickwork. Nienburg has a history stretching back 1,000 years. Other distinct destinations in the broader area are Schinna Monastery in the village of Schinna, part of the municipality of Stolzenau, a monument of significance beyond the region, and Loccum Monastery, built in 1163. In Bücken, the collegiate church of St. Maternian et St. Nicolai houses art treasures, including a rood cross dating from 1230 and richly illustrated stained-glass windows from the 13th century.

The history of buildings and their former uses is also represented in the broader Nienburg destination. The historic barn quarter Im SchĂĽnebusch in Estorf preserves nine traditional barns. They house a local history museum with exhibitions on agricultural implements, rural domestic culture, a bakery and village history. In Landesbergen stands the Wedding Mill, built in 1872, which has a small exhibition devoted to local history.

Boat trips, cycling route and other themes

For a trip on the water, Flotte Mittelweser offers sightseeing, experience and charter cruises on the Weser and Aller rivers, departing from Nienburg or Verden. The timetables are maintained separately by the operator; check the timetable if you are planning a specific trip. Another kind of outing is the 23.6-kilometre circular route on the Weser Cycle Route between Landesbergen and Stolzenau. Check route conditions before setting out. The distance indicates the length of the circular route, while the boat trips offer a selection of different types of cruise.

Another theme in the broader Nienburg destination is geological history: at Dinosaurier-Park MĂĽnchehagen, more than 300 dinosaur footprints can be seen, bearing witness to a time around 140 million years ago. The park offers hands-on activities especially for young children, including the excavation of a 25-metre-long skeleton. These traces of geological history are thus an option in their own right, alongside historic buildings and museum themes.
